AARP Applauds Senate Finance Committee for Supporting Children's Health Care

 | July 17, 2007

AARP issued the following statement from Government Relations Director David Sloane in advance of today's Senate Finance Committee vote to reauthorize and strengthen the State Children's Health Insurance Program.

"AARP is encouraged to see the Senate Finance Committee moving forward to give America's children the health care they need. Reauthorizing and strengthening SCHIP will provide coverage to millions of low-income children so they can grow up to be healthy adults. Raising the tobacco tax not only provides more children with coverage, but also reduces smoking, which drives down the country's health care costs. We applaud the committee for acting on this legislation, and we look forward to working with Congress and the administration on a package that reauthorizes and strengthens SCHIP to extend coverage to millions more uninsured children and improves Medicare for millions of beneficiaries."
