Despite Hollywood's infatuation with youth, half of movie tickets are bought by people over 30. That's why we created a weekly radio feature that focuses exclusively on films created by and for this too-often forgotten age group. "Movies For Grownups" previews upcoming movies, reviews current theatrical and home video releases, and interviews filmmakers whose work reflects the hopes, dreams, and experience of older moviegoers.
Bill Newcott, host of "Movies For Grownups," has spent more time in darkened rooms than most people, and that's a good thing when you love the movies as much as he does. He's been writing about cinema for 30 years, first as a film critic in New York and Los Angeles, and later as an editor with The National Enquirer and National Geographic Magazine. Bill is now the Entertainment editor for AARP The Magazine, where he created the annual Chaise d'Or (Golden Chair) awards for Movies for Grownups.
"Movies for Grownups" is available as a weekly podcast, as are all our other AARP radio programs. Get more information here.
Charles Darwin - who gave birth to the debate of evolution vs. creationism - is brought to the big-screen in the movie "Creation." Director Jon Amiel frames a portrait of a man who's biggest battle over his beliefs was with his devoutly Christian wife.
From a spoonful of sugar...to knowing our favorite things, Julie Andrews has always made movie magic. Bill Newcott talks with the actress about her role in the children's flick "The Tooth Fairy," that's now in theaters.
Cuban-born actor Andy Garcia is a fan of small, independent films.
“It’s never a little film in terms of concept or idea or power,” he tells Movies for Grownups host Bill Newcott. “In all the independent movies I’ve made, the ideas are always very large and very beautiful … “
In March, Garcia will appear in “City Island”, an independent film about a New York City family that unravels its lies, the little white ones and the big ones.
When a famous actor dies in the middle of filming a movie, what does Hollywood do?
