Ok, I suppose I made an error, when I sent in my State Income Tax payment in April.

Though I thought I had everything correct.... I did not put my SSN on the BillPay check.( I rarely ever write a check anymore)

Fast forward---- A letter arrived from my State's Department of Revenue announcing that I owed my income tax. Shockingly,  my payment was not noted on the letter, which caused me some concern. I checked with my BillPay and of course, the check had been cashed and taken from my account...which took the state 45 days to do this.

I called my State Dept. of Revenue waited on hold for 30 minutes and found out the following:

  • Dept of Revenue will deposit your payment to the General Fund, if you leave of your SSN.
  • The rep told me that even, if a person in error mailed their Federal Income Tax Check to the State... that tooooo  will be deposited in the General Fund.
  • The State will make NO Effort to post the taxes to your tax account, without SSN.
  • It is up to the Tax Payer to find out the tax was not posted to your account and correct the error.
  • Provide a copy...front and back of your check to your State and then, they will post it to your account.   (Hopefully, without a big hassle.)
  • I do not know, if they will waive the interest and penalty charges, since they can cite.. "You left off your SSN." (Guilty by omission.)

Lesson learned...

PUT your SSN on all payments to both State and Federal Tax payment or else you will get BITTEN too.

I wonder if a person left off their Social Security number and they had a refund coming what would happen then?

Well refund or payment, due this is a good lesson to us all to be more careful.

Thank you for the warning.
