In early September, I took the Amtrak from Chicago to DC to spend a few days with my daughter Erica who works for the government there. Last year, I took it back to Chicago after Thanksgiving.I don't travel very much, but prefer the freedom of roaming the train, even though the trip is 17 hours. I'm too claustrophic for a plane, even if it is only for 2 hours. The trip is mostly through night, but I end up in the longue car sleeping on a seat where I am basically alone. I love the essence of being alone, of listening to music while writing poetry. I've been on AARP's poetry forum awhile, even writing poetry about the Night Train. I bring my own food, read and write throughout the night. It's a magical time, one that I hope to experience again. My delight is when I reach my destination, feeling that I have "roughed it" for 700 plus miles. I think those who travel by train are very independent and curious members of society. |

The best train trip I ever took was in 1961. I rode
the California Zypher form San Franciso to Chicago.
I had a great time. The view was beautiful.
I can remember it as if it were yesterday. Wish I
could take another trip one day.
I live in Pennsylvania. The trip is probably 800 to 900 miles.
Just click on my picture and that should take you to my profile page, then scroll down to my journals and click on 'journals'. I only have three and it is the one at the bottom. I swear every bit of it actually happened. Last time we went was uneventful.......what a shame. LOL
I also find it very relaxing as what is there to do other than visit other passengers, read, do puzzles, or sleep. Some do take DVD players and laptops. As much as I love being on here once in awhile we need a break from even the good things, so I take it.
I agree the staff has always been friendly and helpful. Even down to getting me back to being able to use my cell phone when I did something stupid with it, he got it going again.
Happy traveling

Hi Linda!
Where do you live? Is Florida very far from your place? How can I read your journal? I am no pro on the computer.
I really like travelling by train, you can read books, do crossword puzzle, or just relax and watch the scenery, and listen to the wheels on the rails.
I do a little bit of travel when I go visit my sister.
The staff are always friendly and helpful.

We have taken it to and from Florida three times to visit my mother. Now she is with us and guess we won't be taking that trip anymore.
If you haven't read my journal on our one trip go to my profile page and read it, I think you will get a kick out of it.
Happy traveling
Linda
