Even though I’m in Las Vegas attending the Vegas@50+ event, I’m still participating in the try-athlon, and I tried a new way to contribute to others yesterday. On a local Las Vegas television show, I enthusiastically described our community and encouraged viewers to join us. I hope I succeeded in conveying how thrilled and delighted I am with how we are helping each other. If you want to view the 3-minute interview, go here: http://tinyurl.com/yfujz32 I also tried a new exercise at the end day on Thursday. Before leaving the convention center, I sat in a circle, along with 30-40 other volunteers, and drummed on bongo drums for 45 minutes. As the group leader said, "This is good exercise, but it is different because your hands will do the walking." He wasn't kidding that drumming on a bongo drum or shaking a tambourine was exercise. I was moving my arms, hands and jumping around in my seat to the beat of the music. When I sat down, I was tired from walking all day, but the music and drum beat quickly re-energized me. As I was beating on a drum with one hand and shaking an odd-looking instrument in the other, I couldn't help but notice a steady stream of smiles of the people walking by. Some shyly sat down and joined in the fun. Some added a little spring to their step and others moved into the circle and began dancing to the beat of the drums. It was a rare person who didn't have a grin on their face. Dozens of us drummed with various people, some coming and some leaving, for well over an hour. I love tennis but this was a new form of exercise and sooooo much fun. Even writing this, I smile when I recall the experience. What new ways of eating or exercising or contributing to others have you tried this week? Becoming a try-athlete will keep us young at heart and will keep our hearts performing like youngsters. Great minds think alike. AARP is planning another organized Challenge in 2010. The target date is March. I'll keep you and the group posted as the plans firm up.
And the convention was wonderful! I live in a rural area on the crest of a mountain so the contrast with Las Vegas could not be greater. In this unique setting, I had a great time meeting with AARP members from all over the United States. Plus, I made a presentation on Saturday to potential members--that is, AARP attendees interested in becoming more fit. All of our combined efforts are needed to reach the individuals who could benefit from being part of our group. I talked more in each of the four 16 hour days than I talk in a week here at home--what a lot of fun!
Carole, That sounds like a ton of fun! my grandkids love music, maybe we will have to make a home made drum set and see how long we can go!
At the gym my new exercise this week was suspended crunches in a captains, or preachers chair. The first day I could only manage 3 but got up to 7 yesterday. Very intense ab work! At home I have added flys using 5 pound weights as well as increasing the number of ball crunches I do to 60 per session. OW! LOL
Have a great time in Vegas and a safe trip home.
As far as contributing to others, I am currently designing a birthday cake for a little girl who will be 4 in early November. Her fathers been out of work for 9 months so they can not afford to get her a nice cake. I will be making her a Blues Clues cake complete with modeled figures of different Blue Clues things like the notebook, chair and magenta!

Very nice video, Carole. That's great you could capitalize on the convention.
Do you think we'll have another Fat2Fit Challenge? Seems to have been so successful!
How is the convention going?
I just watched it Carole. You did a fastastic job! Keep being the inspirational person you are.www.aarp.org/health/healthyliving/fat2fit/
How clever you are with words! If we ever assemble our Fat 2 Fit group face-to-face, I am going to insist that we get into a drummer's circle and play.
That put a whole new twist on the term moving to your own beat or dancing to the drummer.
How cool is that? Would have not thought of it but like the whole concept.
sounds wonderful!!! wish i could
have been there!!!!! how upbeat
