James Brown: What Caregiving Taught Me

Caregiving is rarely easy. I am astounded at how my sister Alisha rose to the challenge. She was an executive at a Fortune 100 company, with two kids in college. She managed Mom's medications, kept her schedule of doctors' appointments, and made sure Mom was comfortable while she was still at home.

A True Win-Win: Why I Volunteer

People often ask how I became interested in community service. My commitment to serve others is inherited: Both of my parents were very active in our community. Whenever they saw a need, they pitched in. It was how I grew up in Washington, D.C.: My parents showed me that people shouldn't think twice when trying to decide whether to help a friend or neighbor in need.

Share the Wisdom: Involving Kids in Service

Motivating others is difficult, especially kids. That's why I make time to talk to a lot of youngsters, to help plant and water the seed of giving in them. We need to teach our kids the value of small gestures. If they see a neighbor whose yard needs trimming, they should knock on the door—especially if it's an older neighbor—and offer to help out.

James Brown: Why I Love Grandparenting

Being a grandparent is like feeling as if you're going to burst with happiness all the time. My 2-year-old granddaughter, Kayla, is the joy of my life. I'm wrapped around her little finger. (We were recently blessed with another granddaughter, and it's only a matter of time before she, too, melts my heart.)

Caregiving for Mom: A Poignant Journey

Family members should support and care for one another no matter what, especially when the chips are down. I shared in the care of my mother, Maryann, toward the end of her life. The experience was extremely humbling and fulfilling.
