2007 Medicare Part D Open Enrollment

Source: AARP.org | January 8, 2007

Beginning Nov.15, it's time once again for Medicare beneficiaries to decide if a Medicare Part D plan is right for them, and if so, which plan they will choose. The 2007 enrollment period, which runs through Dec. 31, also allows those who already have a Medicare Part D plan to choose a different plan if they so desire. On the contrary, those people who are happy with their current Medicare prescription drug plan will not need to take any action during the open enrollment period in order to keep their coverage.

For 2007, Medicare beneficiaries will have more prescription drug plans to chose from, many of which have enhanced benefits including coverage for more medications and coverage through the gap or "doughnut hole."

"AARP is pleased that there will not be an increase in average premiums, and that there are affordable options to help meet everyone's needs," said AARP Oregon State Director Jerry Cohen.

In Oregon alone, Medicare beneficiaries will be able to choose from nearly 60 approved plans for their prescription drug coverage. Plan information is readily available on the Oregon Senior Health Information Benefits Assistance (SHIBA) web site or by calling SHIBA volunteers toll-free at (800) 722-4134.

SHIBA staff and volunteers statewide can help people select a Medicare prescription drug plan, compare supplemental health insurance policies, file an appeal or insurance complaint, or evaluate the need for long-term care insurance.

The newly expanded Oregon Prescription Drug Program, when combined with Medicare Part D, is also a safety net option for the small percentage of seniors who may fall into the "donut hole" or coverage gap. Contact SHIBA or OPDP toll-free at 888-411-OPDP for more information.

AARP also has a wealth of information in its Medicare Rx Educational Guide. Members can find AARP online publications on what to look for when choosing a plan, information on low-income Medicare beneficiary options, and information specific to Oregon SHIBA and other resources to help with prescription drug costs.

Cohen also urges Oregonians with Medicare who have limited income and resources to apply for "Extra Help." Extra Help can cover prescription drug premiums and co-pays, and it is free to apply. It works with any Medicare Part D plan to save you money on your prescription costs. Even if you don't have a Part D plan yet, you can still sign up for Extra Help. To apply, call the AARP Extra Help Application Center toll-free at (800)985-6848 or the Social Security Administration at (800)772-1213. You have nothing to lose, and a lot to gain.
