Peter Greenberg: What Does My Travel Insurance Cover?

Dear Peter, I always purchase travel insurance for emergency health and accident events. I am not really sure what else it covers. Does it cover small events, like lost luggage that arrives three days late? –Chava Brooklyn, N.Y.

Peter Greenberg: Airline Pet Fees

Hi, Peter. My 70-year-old mom flies in from Louisiana to visit me several times a year. She stays a few weeks. She likes to bring her small dog with her. When she first started visiting years ago, the airline pet fees were $50 each way. Now many of them cost $150 each way. Why are the fees so high for a carry-on dog kennel that sits under the seat? Which airline has the cheapest pet fees? Are there any discounts for seniors? –Stacey, Knoxville, Tenn.

Peter Greenberg: Europe for the Physically Challenged

I heard that there is a lot of walking when one travels to Europe, and European countries do not have the convenience of ADA compliance like the U.S. Does this mean that my sister and I (who are both physically challenged) will never get to see Europe? We would like to make the trip, but everyone tells us, "No way!” She's 80 and I'm 64. Can you suggest anything? -Jean, Anaheim, Calif. Here's a list of the good, the bad, and the ugly, in overseas currency-conversion fees.

Peter Greenberg: East Coast Road Trip

If you were to travel by car from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to Boston in 5-6 days, where would you make stops? Savannah, Ga., and Charleston, S.C., are two places we would like to see. Are there any others you would recommend? -George, Boston, Mass.

Peter Greenberg: Pests on Vacation

We are planning a car trip to Maine and other states on the East Coast. When we mentioned this to someone, she said there is a certain time during the summer when the black flies are a huge problem, but she didn't know just when. We don't want to have to put up with swarms of flies. Do you know when it would be a good time to go and avoid them? Thank you. -Patricia Molitor, Holmen, Wis.

Peter Greenberg: Cheaper Family Reunion Travel

I am planning a family reunion near Glacier National Park, Mont., and have several relatives from Alabama and Georgia who are now unable to attend because of the high price of airline tickets to Kalispell, Mont. Do you have any suggestion about obtaining cheaper tickets? Perhaps a group rate or some other tactic to reduce the cost of this travel?

Peter Greenberg: Reunion Destinations

Our group of eight ladies, all over 50 & former coworkers, are plannning a get-together. We live in New York, Virginia, North Carolina & Florida and are hoping for a central location to meet up. Looking for a getaway place for a "reunion" for a few days. Resorts are "in season" and too expensive. Can you recommend something that would fit the bill for us?

Peter Greenberg: Space Launch Tour

I would like to take my soon-to-be 95-year-old father on a trip to see the shuttle launch in Florida. He is in comparatively good health and can walk pretty well with the aid of a cane. The launch does not always take place as planned, and a "window" can be up to three days, so it’s hard to plan how long to stay. I am looking for resources, packages, etc., for a 5–7 day stay in the Space Coast area. We will fly from this area there and rent a car. (My son is an aerospace engineer who works on the project, and I know it will be a real thrill for my father to see what his grandson does for a living.) Any help from you would be appreciated, so that we can save money on hotels. Thanks. -Ruth, Memphis, Tenn.

Peter Greenberg: Forfeiting an Air Ticket

My wife and I plan to cruise on a one-way trip from Lisbon, Portugal, to Florida. The cruise company charges a very high price for a one-way airfare, and so do most airlines. I found a travel company offering a tour of one week in Portugal, including airfare, hotel, and rental auto, for a little over $1,000. Why not take the tour and on the last day board the vessel for the trans-Atlantic cruise? We would just forfeit the return air ticket! I know airlines don't go for that, but what can they do about it? Should I do what I have proposed above? Thank you. -T. Lewis, Severna Park, Md.
