Q: My wife and I decided to take our annual trip to Beijing this year and see the Olympics first hand. How do we avoid all the other tourists and still get to see everything?
-Harold, Palm Beach, FL
A: Since most of the places to see in Beijing are large outdoor monuments, you won’t have to wait in line long before entering. However, it’s different once you are inside: the crowds can be overwhelming. Although there is no secret to avoiding this, here are some tips that may help your visit to China’s capital city more enjoyable.
First off, be aware that you're going to have to deal with crushing traffic. Beijing is among the world's most crowded cities and its streets crawl at rush hour. Do your best to avoid it for easier travels, and consider the city's new subway system if it's convenient.
Obviously, the Great Wall of China is a big draw. Most people don’t realize that the Great Wall of China is actually spread out into several parts--it's a long, great wall after all. The most famous and most developed part for tourism is the section in Badaling. With cable cars and a long continuous pathway, it is easy to navigate Badaling. However, because of this, it is the most visited section. Other sections, such as the Mutianyu, have been developed as well, but they are not as popular so you’ll have less crowded experience. There are even less developed sections, such as the one in Huanhuacheng; however, since they haven’t been retrofitted for tourism they normally require more experienced hikers and climbers.
Something to remember: Beijing is exceptionally hot in the summer. Make sure to keep hydrated throughout the day and take breaks from walking if you are too hot. You won’t be able to enjoy the sights if you are feeling terrible!
