Fraud Talk Tuesday: Home Equity Theft
Tuesday, April 14, 12:00 PM - 12:30 PM
When a homeowner is struggling financially, they may be inundated with direct mail and phone calls from investors who claim they want to "help." Unfortunately, most of those offers of help are exactly the opposite. Companies who directly solicit homeowners to sell the home, using "we buy houses" language, typically offer much less than the home is worth. They often overstate the challenges of listing a home publicly for sale and understate the home's value. Other companies claim they will help "rescue" the home from a foreclosure, but deceive the homeowner into signing a deed rather than a loan. With home values high and economic uncertainty also surging, many older homeowners are likely targets for these kinds of scams. In this session, we will talk about red flags, how to prevent home equity theft scams, and policy solutions that can make a difference.
