Westchester County Makes Itself Livable for Residents 50+
By: States: New York
Westchester County wants to be a model nationwide for aging baby boomers. One in every five county residents is age 60 or older. With AARP and the Westchester Public/Private Partnership for Aging Services, the county recently launched the Livable Community Connection, a network of nine sites around the county, to develop neighborhoods that enable older residents to age in place and live independently.
Each community will focus on cultivating more affordable housing options, accessible transportation and other mobility options, and well-run community centers with desirable programs and socializing events. The Livable Community Connection is addressing problems that Westchester County residents age 50 and older identified in an AARP survey.
Among the survey findings:
• 90% of Westchester county residents age 50+ get around their neighborhood by car which makes improved traffic conditions and street repair an important modification.
• Affordable housing factors heavily into older adults’ being able to age with dignity and grace in their own homes.
• Although most residents drive, those who do not see the importance of improving the proximity and limitations of public transportation.
