AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is the nation's largest free, volunteer-led tax preparation program, primarily serving older adults with low income who need help filing their taxes. As a volunteer, you can make a big difference in someone’s life — in a short amount of time.
Affordable tax preparation can be a hurdle for many older taxpayers in need, causing them to miss out on hard-earned tax breaks. Last year, AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers helped people earn more than $1 billion in refunds, putting money back in the hands of the people who need it most.
No tax preparation experience? No problem! There are plenty of ways to volunteer with us and do good in your community. Whether you enjoy working with numbers, connecting with people, or leading a team, there’s a role for you. Plus, the camaraderie and support make volunteering fun!

No Tax-Prep Experience Necessary
We provide all the training you’ll need. Everyone is welcome!
Training and Guidance
Volunteer 1-3 days a week during tax season, which runs February through mid-April.
What's It Like to Volunteer?
Committed volunteers like you can make a difference in so many ways. Beyond preparing tax returns, there are vital roles for strong communicators and leaders who can help by organizing client paperwork, managing computer equipment, acting as interpreters, or making sure everything runs smoothly. You’ll receive training and support, learn new skills, and have fun while helping others. Time commitment for training and volunteering varies by role and site, ranging from just a few hours up to 40 hours per week.

Good With the Fine Print?
Tax counselors help taxpayers find credits and deductions they’ve earned and file their tax returns. Learn how to prepare taxes and meet standards set by the IRS.
Are You a People Person?
Become a client facilitator! You'll greet taxpayers, organize their documents, and ensure a smooth, positive experience from start to finish. Or become a prospective volunteer specialist, who screens new applicants to help find the best volunteer role for them!
Skilled in All Things Digital?
Technology specialists manage computer equipment, ensure taxpayer data is secure, and provide technical assistance to volunteers at different local sites.
Have a Knack for Running Things?
Step into a leadership or administrative volunteer role and ensure program operations run smoothly. You’ll manage volunteers, track volunteer assignments and site activities, and maintain quality control.
