Great films, wild docs and the return of ‘The Bear’ make this streamer the place to go this month

The very idea of summer TV doldrums is ancient history at Hulu, where good stuff to watch arrives every few days: classic movies, intense documentaries that keep us riveted, hilarious comedy specials and new seasons of massive hits like The Bear. Here are the best things coming to Hulu in June.

Coming June 1

Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (PG-13, 2004)

Belly laugh your way into summer with this hit from Will Ferrell, 56. It began as a critical also-ran, but on its 20th anniversary, it’s a comedy icon. Costarring the always great Christina Applegate, 52, as the titular hero’s challenger for the anchor desk, this directorial debut from Adam McKay, 56, also features Paul Rudd, 55, and Steve Carell, 61. Want more Ron in your life? The 2013 sequel, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, also begins a run on Hulu on June 1.

Borat! Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (R, 2006)

Great success! Minting a cringe-hilarious marriage of mockumentaries like This Is Spinal Tap with the unscripted chaos of reality TV, English comic Sacha Baron Cohen, 52, sent his gangly, say-anything reporter alter ego, Borat, into the heart of America. It’s hard to imagine the film still feels subversive after nearly 20 years, but it does. And it’s still LOL funny.

Death on the Nile (PG-13, 2022)

Actor-director Kenneth Branagh, 63, reaches for the mustache wax in his second turn as one of Agatha Christie’s most divine confections: Belgian crime-solver Hercule Poirot (his first was in 2017’s huge, even better hit Murder on the Orient Express, which Branagh also directed). This reboot of the 1978 film starring Peter Ustinov features sumptuous scenery, a ship worthy of Instagram and an all-star cast of whodunit suspects, including Annette Bening, 66, Sophie Okonedo, 55, Wonder Woman’s Gal Gadot and the legendary Absolutely Fabulous star Jennifer Saunders, 65.

Working Girl (R, 1988)

Come for the impeccable trio of stars — Harrison Ford, 81, Sigourney Weaver, 74, and Melanie Griffith, 66 — but stay for the big hair, shoulder pads and eyeglasses of the 1980s as well as the assured comic hand of director Mike Nichols in this workplace Cinderella spin. You might need a scorecard to keep up with the deep bench of supporting appearances from Joan Cusack, 61, Alec Baldwin, 66, Nora Dunn, 72, Oliver Platt, 64, Kevin Spacey, 64, and Olympia Dukakis.

Coming June 4

Clipped

FX hits the court with a dramatic retelling of the 2014 scandal involving L.A. Clippers owner Donald Sterling (Ed O’Neill, 78) and his notorious (and documented on audiotape) racist remarks to his mistress. Laurence Fishburne, 62, plays Doc Rivers, the legendary Black coach caught in the crossfire, and Jacki Weaver, 77, is Sterling’s rightly embittered wife, Shelly. The miniseries is based on ESPN’s 30 for 30 podcast The Sterling Affairs.

Erased: WW2’s Heroes of Color

From National Geographic, this four-part docuseries shines a much-needed light on heretofore untold stories of soldiers of color in the landmark conflict. English actor Idris Elba, 51, whose grandfather fought in World War II, narrates and co-executive produces the episodes, which blend character portraits with battle sequences, and point to how these heroes inspired Civil Rights movements in America and beyond.

Becoming Karl Lagerfeld

Couldn’t get enough of the high drama of high fashion in The New Look this winter? Replace Coco Chanel and Christian Dior with Karl Lagerfeld and Yves Saint Laurent and we’re headed down the catwalk in Becoming Karl Lagerfeld. Daniel Brühl (The Alienist) stars as the young Lagerfeld, aiming to become the “Emperor of Fashion,” Arnaud Valois (Good Grief) is the formidable Saint Laurent, and couture-crazed Paris, Monaco and Rome of the 1970s provide the irresistible scenery.

Coming June 13

Brats

You know you’re a card-carrying AARP member when you can identify the stars in both the Rat Pack and the Brat Pack, the mid-1980s inheritors of the modified mantle. But did they want it? Brat Packer Andrew McCarthy, 61, who pivoted from acting to travel writing, now grabs the camera and checks in with his fellow Brats to review the evidence. The result is a nostalgia-fueled visit with the kids who brought you St. Elmo’s Fire and The Breakfast Club, among other generational touchstones: Demi Moore, 61, Rob Lowe, 60, Emilio Estevez, 62, Molly Ringwald, 56, Ally Sheedy, 61, Timothy Hutton, 63, Lea Thompson, 62 (who claims to be “Brat Pack adjacent”), and Jon Cryer, 59, who says he wasn’t a Brat Packer at all. Don’t you forget about them!

Coming June 14

Mike Birbiglia: What I Should Have Said Was Nothing (2008)

If you are not already addicted to the gently intellectual, comic storytelling of Mike Birbiglia, now’s the time to get on board, beginning with his second live comedy special, culled from intimate observations from life and his diary, which he calls “my secret public journal.”

Margaret Cho: PsyCHO (2015)

Comedian Margaret Cho, 55, brings her trademark provocative stand-up to the main stage in this live comedy event where nothing is off-limits, from Boko Haram to female empowerment. Cho also works prolifically in TV and film, including playing herself in Season 2 of Hacks

Coming June 21

Shoresy, Season 3

Scratch that Ted Lasso itch with this droll, profane, offbeat Canada-based sitcom, now in its third season. Here, the challenge is on the ice, not the pitch. The Sudbury Bulldogs face utter shutdown after 20 straight losses in the AAA Northern Ontario Senior Hockey Organization, paving the way for veteran player “Shoresy” (creator and star Jared Keeto) to bet his general manager that the team will never lose again if he’s put in charge. In Season 3, the Bulldogs have clawed their way to the national championship — no better complement to the month’s Stanley Cup finals.

Diane von Furstenberg: Woman in Charge

It’s hard to find a working woman who does not know a DvF dress when she sees one, particularly the designer’s iconic wrap dress, which defined workplace fashion aspirations for American women. This new Disney+ documentary, codirected by two-time Academy Award–winning filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Saving Face) and Trish Dalton (Student Athlete), brings von Furstenberg, 77, into appropriately bright focus. Not only is she a pioneer but she remains a fierce force in both the fashion and philanthropic communities (she and husband Barry Diller, 82, led the groundbreaking High Line project on Manhattan’s West Side).

Coming June 27

The Bear, Season 3

After a triumphant round of Emmy and Golden Globe awards, FX’s acclaimed, high-intensity series set in a Chicago restaurant returns for another season, exploring themes of family (both chosen and inherited) and food. Will Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) and Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) find love amid partnership? Will Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) keep it together? Will it all fall apart when the kitchen gets too hot? Join the legions of breathless fans of one of the most talked about shows of the 2020s. Yes, chef!
