10 Hybrid Remote Jobs That Are in Demand Now

Openings for fully work-from-home positions are decreasing

As more employers are requiring their workers to return to offices, the balance of new job openings is starting to shift. Hybrid positions — which require workers to be in the office for at least part of the week — are on the rise while fully remote job openings are starting to decline.

According to an analysis of postings to its site, the job-search engine Adzuna saw 281,766 postings for hybrid jobs through July of this year. That’s over 34,000 more postings for hybrid positions than the site saw during the same period last year. While fully remote positions remain very popular and outnumbered postings for hybrid jobs, the website saw a drop in postings for work-from-home positions this year when compared to the same period last year.

“The shifts in the way we work are unprecedented, and the data suggests we are heading for a future where remote work and the office converge — even for traditionally deskless workers like those in education and health care,” says James Neave, head of data science for Adzuna. “Embracing a hybrid model, professionals will bask in the best of both worlds, capitalizing on the flexibility of remote work while cherishing the camaraderie and innovation nurtured by in-person interactions at the office and on-site.”

Information technology, accounting and finance, and health care and nursing were some of the fields that had the most postings for hybrid positions in Adzuna’s report. AARP analyzed current postings on the AARP Job Board to identify jobs in those fields with employers who are interested in an age-diverse workforce.

The following 10 jobs are listed in alphabetical order. All wage data is from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

Accountant

Average wage: $37.50 per hour

Find accountant jobs

This profession currently has some of the most openings for hybrid positions, in part because more than 300,000 accountants have left the field in recent years, according to The Wall Street Journal. Many workers with the skills for numbers are pursuing jobs in data analysis and other similar fields. The decrease in people seeking accounting positions could give qualified workers applying for jobs now some leverage to ask for higher salaries and other benefits.

Bookkeeper

Average wage: $22.74 per hour

Find bookkeeper jobs

This career, a longtime favorite of older adults, has one bonus in addition to the availability of hybrid positions. According to a PayScale analysis, bookkeeping is one of the most ‘recession-proof’ careers. While concerns about an economic downturn have eased since the start of the year, it couldn’t hurt to be working in a field with steady employment demand.

Financial analyst

Average wage: $46.26 per hour

Find finance jobs

Financial analysts mostly research businesses and market trends to help individuals and companies choose where to invest their money. That means the role doesn’t generally require much time in the office, outside of meetings. This profession’s stock is on the rise, too, with the number of jobs in the field projected to grow 9 percent by 2031, according to the BLS.

Human resources coordinator

Average wage: $62.50 per hour

Recent layoffs — more than 223,000 this year, according to the tally at TechCrunch — mostly have been limited to the fields of technology and communications. But that turnover means difficult work for HR specialists, who play a role in deciding which employees lose jobs. Some HR coordinators opt to look for new jobs themselves once the layoffs are finished, resulting in steady demand for these professionals.

Nurse practitioner

Average wage: $58.47 per hour

Find nurse jobs

Nurse practitioner topped U.S. News & World Report’s list of the Best Health Care Jobs earlier this year, suggesting that it’s a profession with promise if you’re looking for a career switch. The rise in telehealth appointments during the first two years of the COVID pandemic demonstrated that nurse practitioners, who require at least a master’s degree, can help the nation meet its rising demand for health care workers.

Project manager

Average wage: $45.85 per hour

Find project manager jobs

Project management is a role that has benefited somewhat from the rise of hybrid work. Scheduling group meetings, for example, for everyone involved in a project is less complicated when participants have the option to join in person or remote via video. Of course, meetings are just a small part of a project manager’s role. Delivering results — the hard part — hasn’t changed much.

Recruiter

Average hourly wage: $30.88 per hour

Find recruiter jobs

The “Great Resignation” period of workers rapidly switching jobs may largely be over, but there still is plenty of demand for recruiters who can help businesses fill open positions. There were more than 10 million job openings unfilled as of the end of August, according to the U.S. Labor Department.

Sales executive

Average wage: $62.79 per hour

Find sales jobs

According to research from McKinsey & Company, hybrid approaches to sales will be the dominant form of business-to-business sales by next year. The reasons for the hybrid’s rise may be obvious, as one buyer explained: “Please stop asking to meet with me in person. I’m busy enough as it is.” For sales executives, the switch to hybrid work means more efficient ways to connect with customers.

Software engineer

Average wage: $59.71 per hour

Find software engineer jobs

Software engineering is one of the professions that could see the most changes due to the arrival of artificial intelligence technologies such as ChatGPT. With just a few quick prompts, these A.I. tools can quickly produce computer code that these engineers otherwise would have to do themselves. It’s unclear what this new tech will mean for careers in this field in the long term, but the Gartner consulting firm says A.I. will be one of the profession’s top strategic technology trends for the near future.

Web developer

Average wage: $38.81 per hour

Find web developer jobs

Websites and apps are essential for businesses and organizations of all types, which means that web developers also are necessary. In addition to opportunities for hybrid work, this profession also offers flexibility through contract work or opening your own web development business.
