As more employers are requiring their workers to return to offices, the balance of new job openings is starting to shift. Hybrid positions — which require workers to be in the office for at least part of the week — are on the rise while fully remote job openings are starting to decline.
According to an analysis of postings to its site, the job-search engine Adzuna saw 281,766 postings for hybrid jobs through July of this year. That’s over 34,000 more postings for hybrid positions than the site saw during the same period last year. While fully remote positions remain very popular and outnumbered postings for hybrid jobs, the website saw a drop in postings for work-from-home positions this year when compared to the same period last year.
“The shifts in the way we work are unprecedented, and the data suggests we are heading for a future where remote work and the office converge — even for traditionally deskless workers like those in education and health care,” says James Neave, head of data science for Adzuna. “Embracing a hybrid model, professionals will bask in the best of both worlds, capitalizing on the flexibility of remote work while cherishing the camaraderie and innovation nurtured by in-person interactions at the office and on-site.”
Information technology, accounting and finance, and health care and nursing were some of the fields that had the most postings for hybrid positions in Adzuna’s report. AARP analyzed current postings on the AARP Job Board to identify jobs in those fields with employers who are interested in an age-diverse workforce.
The following 10 jobs are listed in alphabetical order. All wage data is from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
Accountant
Average wage: $37.50 per hour
This profession currently has some of the most openings for hybrid positions, in part because more than 300,000 accountants have left the field in recent years, according to The Wall Street Journal. Many workers with the skills for numbers are pursuing jobs in data analysis and other similar fields. The decrease in people seeking accounting positions could give qualified workers applying for jobs now some leverage to ask for higher salaries and other benefits.
Bookkeeper
Average wage: $22.74 per hour
This career, a longtime favorite of older adults, has one bonus in addition to the availability of hybrid positions. According to a PayScale analysis, bookkeeping is one of the most ‘recession-proof’ careers. While concerns about an economic downturn have eased since the start of the year, it couldn’t hurt to be working in a field with steady employment demand.
