Help Older Adults Get Back to Work

AARP Foundation collaborates with community partners to help us empower older jobseekers and workers.

AARP Foundation Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP)

AARP Foundation SCSEP matches unemployed adults with local nonprofits and public agencies so they can increase skills and build confidence while earning a modest training wage. These training assignments give participants— who must be 55 or older and have very low income — the knowledge and experience to obtain future employment. At the same time, the “host” organizations benefit from access to an expanded workforce at no additional cost. Learn how you can become an AARP Foundation SCSEP host agency.

BACK TO WORK 50+

BACK TO WORK 50+ has been doing just what its name says — helping people over 50 get back to work — since 2013. The free program helps unemployed older adults build the skills and confidence they need to compete for high-quality jobs. Its success depends on a nationwide network of community partners who implement the program in their area. Community partners reach and serve older adults by incorporating tools and resources that address the unique challenges jobseekers over 50 face as they look for new work opportunities. Digital Skills Ready@50+ Initiative

The Digital Skills Ready@50+™ initiative meets a pressing need: digital skills training for people over 50 who are living with low income. AARP Foundation has teamed up with Older Adults Technology Services (OATS) from AARP and community partners to offer a training program that gives older adults — especially women and people of color — workplace technology skills. Learn how you can help us to teach older adults to succeed with digital skills.

Improve Child Literacy

Experience Corps

AARP Foundation Experience Corps engages highly trained adults over 50 to help children become proficient readers by the end of the third grade. It’s a proven “triple win,” helping students succeed, older adults thrive, and communities grow stronger.

Research shows that Experience Corps is one of the most effective K-3 literacy interventions — one that generates enduring positive outcomes for students, volunteers, schools, and communities. With its intergenerational approach, the program not only helps students at a critical juncture in their education but also engages volunteers in their communities, putting their wisdom to work while they guide the next generation of readers.

We’re working closely with municipalities, community agencies and school districts across the country to expand the Experience Corps network. Learn how to become an Experience Corps Program Partner.

Grantmaking

AARP Foundation’s grantmaking supports sustainable, real-world solutions to the fundamental challenges facing older adults with low income. We collaborate with grantee and partner organizations to identify evidence-based projects that transform lives and communities — projects that we know can be expanded nationwide. Through grants, AARP Foundation enables grantees to help more people and work more efficiently, with a goal of bringing proven new approaches to scale and making resources go further.
