Toyota is recalling certain Tundra pickup trucks and Lexus LX600 SUVs because debris from manufacturing may not have been cleared from the engine and could cause the vehicles to stall or lose power, the company announced in a press release.

Toyota estimates that 102,092 vehicles are subject to the recall: 98,568 Tundras and 3,524 LX600s.

The affected vehicles are equipped with a V35A engine. If residual debris from manufacturing gets stuck in the engine, it could cause the engine to make unusual noises, run roughly, fail to start or suddenly stop. If the engine stalls while driving, the car will lose power, increasing the risk of an accident.

The recalled vehicles

The recall applies to certain:

  • 2022 and 2023 model Lexus LX600 SUVs (manufactured Nov. 2, 2021, through Feb. 13, 2023)
  • 2022 and 2023 model Toyota Tundra pickup trucks (manufactured July 30, 2021, through Nov. 25, 2022)

“V35A engines of this configuration, manufactured after this production period, were manufactured with new or improved processes that better clear machining debris,” Toyota said in a defect information report. “Other Toyota or Lexus vehicles sold in the U.S. are not equipped with this engine or have a different V35A engine configuration with different pressure on the main bearings.”

If the engine fails in a hybrid vehicle, it can still operate for a short distance. The driver will receive continuous audible warnings, warning lights and visual messages, Toyota said.

Advice to owners

Lexus and Toyota owners will be notified of the recall by late July and repairs will be made free of charge. Anyone who already paid for repairs may request a reimbursement through Toyota’s General Reimbursement Plan.

To find out whether your vehicle is affected, check your license plate or 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Recalls Lookup Tool.

Owners with questions are encouraged to call the agency’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236.
