Approximately 1.5 million adult portable bed rails were recalled due to the risk of trapping or choking users, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced Thursday.

The agency noted people can become trapped within the bed rail itself or between the bed rail and the side of the mattress.

Two deaths have been associated with the products, including a 76-year-old woman at a senior nursing facility in Iowa and an 87-year-old woman at a residential care facility in South Carolina.

The recalled bed rails

Two models of Bed Assist Bar adult portable bed rails were recalled. Although the two models are identical, model number MDS6800BA was sold individually while model number MDS6800BAH was sold in cases of three units.

The products are made of black metal tubing with a black foam rubber grip and fabric pouch. The name “Medline” and model number are printed on a label located on the support frame near the vertical portion of the rail.

The items were sold from July 2009 through March 2024 through Medline’s websites and other online retailers including Amazon and Walmart.com, CVS.com and Walgreens.com. Medical supply retailers such as Cascade Healthcare Solutions and Magic Medical also carried the products.

Advice to consumers

Anyone who has the recalled products should stop using them immediately and contact Medline to receive a refund.

The company can be contacted at 866-359-1704, recalls@medline.com or visit Recalls.Medline.com or AtHome.Medline.com and click “Product Recalls” at the bottom of the page.

In April, a recall from 2021 was reissued after two more deaths were reported from using four models of adult bed rails made by Essential Medical Supply.
