FROM MICHIGAN
Hello AARP, my name is David. I am a Technician in the great state of MI. I would like to start of by saying a big thank you for giving people the chance to tell how it is to be a caregiver and to help others know what it is like. My wife and I are a caregiver for my dad John. My dad growing up was one of those big guys with a even bigger heart who you thought was 10 foot tall and bullet proof. After my mom passed away my family and I spent a lot of time with dad. He was very lonely. My dad has been paralyzed since 2010 when he was in a accident caused by a chicken plant 18 wheeler losing control coming down a hill. At the time to see my dad in such a weak state it kind of took my breath away. It has been an adjustment for him for sure. Over the years we have all learned that although he can not walk anymore hes still the same ole dad. My dad likes to be outdoors. Working a full time job it can be hard to find the time to get him out as much as he would like. I am blessed to have children whom come over to help as much as they can. On top of the accident my dad has developed high blood pressure, diabetes, and arthritis. Still never a day goes by that he is not smiling and happy to be here with his family. Family is the only thing in this world that we have at times. No one should take it for granted.
