FROM OHIO
The day before my mum died, I went on a first date, proudly assuring the woman I was with that while I helped care for my father (Bill), bathroom issues weren't my job, so not a biggie that I'd come complete with caregiving duties. I swear God laughed at my hubris. Six years later, we've been through a hospitalization for a camphylobacter infection, bronchitis, and the flu. We've had homecare and decided that for now, it's easier with just Da and me getting it done. Well, my dad, me, and a crew of amazing friends and neighbours. I don't want to get too far into diagnoses, but we're living with the effects of long-tern dementia and physical disabilities. From the outside, I'm sure life in this house looks crazy and stressful. To be honest, though, I wouldn't make any other choices if I could do it over. This time has taught me a patience I never knew I had lurking in me, and one smile from Da is all I need to know all is well in my world. I have no idea what comes next, but one day at a time has been well worth it. The state of the Bill is strong.
