AARP Hearing Center
LOCATION: East Providence, Rhode Island
The gap in services and supports for older adults can be exacerbated for LGBTQ+ people. Often childless or estranged from family, many LGBTQ+ older adults have no one to help or care for them as they age. Recognizing the need for suitable housing and elder care services, AARP Rhode Island helped connect a nonprofit developer, a skilled nursing and assisted living provider, and members of the LGBTQ+ community to create Aldersbridge at East Point, an affordable housing and care option for gay older adults and their allies. The residential complex and care facility is expected to have a positive economic impact on the neighborhood by adding new residents (i.e., new customers for local businesses) and related new jobs.
