Age-Friendly Winter Event Brings Joy

Watch a video about this winning project from a 2020 AARP Community Challenge grantee

LOCATION: Millinocket, Maine
GRANTEE: Town of Millinocket

Residents of Millinocket are working to make their town a four-season, outdoor destination and age-friendly community. When the pandemic struck, they began thinking creatively for ways they could still achieve this goal despite health restrictions. Their project, the “Katahdin Snowdown,” is a new event that followed local COVID protocols, while encouraging residents to get outside again and learn about their town. They hope that the event can soon bring visitors to the town in what has traditionally been a slow season.

The AARP Community Challenge funds "quick-action" projects that build momentum for local change to improve livability for people of all ages.
