Video: Transforming a Motel Into Accessible, Temporary Housing

Learn about a project helped by a 2021 AARP Community Challenge grant

LOCATION: Medford, Oregon
GRANTEE: Rogue Retreat

When the COVID-19 pandemic and Almeda Fire exasperated an already declining housing market, Rogue Retreat looked for ways to help. Using funds from Project Turnkey — a grant program from the State of Oregon and the Oregon Community Foundation — a vacant motel was purchased and transformed into accessible, temporary studio apartments for low-income people without housing. Rogue Retreat used a 2021 AARP Community Challenge grant to hire an architect to design ADA-compliant floor plans and convert a ground floor unit.
