The AARP Livability Index™ platform is a signature initiative of the Public Policy Institute (PPI) to measure the quality of life in American communities across multiple dimensions: housing, transportation, neighborhood characteristics, environment, health, opportunity, and civic and social engagement.

An interactive, easily navigated website, the AARP Livability Index™ platform allows community members, policymakers, and advocates to compare communities, adjust scores based on personal preferences and learn how to take action to make their own communities more livable.

New Features in 2023

Explore All Communities Search: Users can customize their search by geographic region, community size, livability category, individual measures of livability, and other community features.
Community Finder Quiz: This quick five-question survey helps users find communities that meet their individual preferences and needs.
Updated Score Gauge: A new, inclusive color palette visualizes data on the scoring gauge and map. Users will also find context for the lowest, average, and highest livability score ranges for the specific geography they are searching.
Updated Data: The platform uses the latest indicator data for each category of livability with in-depth insights into understanding the data with expanded details of methods and sources.
Top 100 Communities List: Users can gain new insights by learning about the top-scoring places across the nation leading the way in making communities more livable. The list now includes counties and county subdivisions.

How can I use the AARP Livability Index™ platform?

The platform may be used in a number of ways.

Housing

A county executive wants to know how to meet the housing needs of older adults. She can see how her community performs for each of the housing metrics relative to the national average and learn about policy and programmatic interventions that could address areas of concern.

Transportation

The director of a nonprofit organization wants to show the need for transportation services in the community. He can view data on transit service available to various neighborhoods in the community and connect to resources explaining how transit is typically funded.

Health

A health official is interested in exploring how the built environment may influence health. She can see the relative rates of obesity and smoking on a map and then check whether each neighborhood in a county has access to grocery stores and farmers’ markets.

Neighborhood

Mary has a 15-year old son and is a caregiver to her father. She is looking for a new place to live that is walkable and where there is a lot of green space, library access, and has great transportation options for both her father and son. She uses the platform to look at the Neighborhood and Transportation categories to compare walkability scores, access to parks and libraries, and the frequency of local transportation among multiple communities.
