In Pursuit of Healthspan — Guided by AARP Geroscience Principles
People around the world are living longer than ever before. By 2050, more than one billion people will be age 65 or older—a landmark achievement that also presents a defining challenge: ensuring those added years are lived in good health.
As attention shifts from how long we live to how well we age, research into extending healthspan—the years of life spent in good health—is rapidly accelerating. Geroscience, a growing scientific field focused on delaying or preventing age‑related disease, holds significant promise, with early human trials already underway.
In this article, AARP authors offer six practical Geroscience Principles, grounded in the organization’s mission and core values, to help guide this emerging field. Together, they focus on access, affordability, equity, and transparency—so future breakthroughs support longer, healthier lives for everyone, not just a few.
