WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

How do I register to vote?

Online: Go to the state’s registration portal at servicearizona.com/VoterRegistration and follow the prompts. You will need a valid Arizona driver’s license or ID card issued by the state Motor Vehicle Division.

By mail: Go to azsos.gov/elections/voters, scroll down to and select Register/Update to Vote, and then click on Voter Registration Form. Print and complete the registration form or request one by mail from your county recorder’s office.

Mail the completed registration form to your county recorder. To find your local office, go to azsos.gov/elections/about-elections and select County Election Officials Contact Information on the right.

In person: Register at your county recorder’s office, a Motor Vehicle Division office, the Arizona Game and Fish Department, armed forces recruiting centers or any state public assistance and disability agencies.

To register, you must submit with your voter registration form proof of citizenship, such as an unexpired Arizona driver’s license issued after Oct. 1, 1996, a copy of your tribal certificate or U.S. naturalization documents. For a full list of acceptable documents, go to azsos.gov/elections/voters and select Registration Requirements. If you don’t provide proof of citizenship, you’ll be eligible to vote in federal elections but not in state, county and local elections.

The deadline to register is Monday, July 1, at 11:59 p.m. Check your registration status at my.arizona.vote.

Help for military and overseas voters is available through the Federal Voting Assistance Program at fvap.gov.

Which primary do I vote in?

If you’re registered with a state-recognized party (Republican, Democratic, Libertarian, Green or No Labels parties), you can vote only in that party’s primary. If you’re an independent or unaffiliated voter, you may select a Democratic or Republican ballot.

How can I request a ballot-by-mail?

Any registered Arizona voter can request a ballot-by-mail.

When registering to vote, sign up for the Active Early Voting List to automatically receive a ballot-by-mail. If already registered, sign up online by going to the state’s registration portal at servicearizona.com/VoterRegistration and updating your voter registration. You must provide an Arizona driver’s license or state ID number.

You can also sign up for the list by sending a completed request form to your county recorder’s office by mail, fax or email. To print a form, go to azsos.gov/elections/voters, select Early Voting, then select Option 2. Also find instructions on how to request a onetime ballot-by-mail on the Early Voting page. Ballot-by-mail requests must be received by county officials by Friday, July 19.

How do I return my ballot-by-mail?

Mail your ballot using the prepaid envelope provided. The secretary of state’s office recommends mailing it at least seven to 10 days before Election Day. Or return it to any ballot drop box or to a drop-off, early voting or Election Day voting location in your county. Your ballot must be received by county election officials by 7 p.m. on primary day.

A ballot-by-mail can be returned only by the voter, a member of the voter’s family or household, or the voter’s caregiver.

Can I vote early?

Early in-person voting begins on Wednesday, July 3, and ends on Friday, July 26, at 7 p.m., though hours may vary by county. Contact or visit the website of your county recorder for more information.

Do I need ID to vote?

You’ll need to provide your name, place of residence and an approved photo ID, such as a valid Arizona driver’s license or ID card.

If you can’t provide a valid photo ID, you may provide two alternative forms of ID, such as a recent utility bill, bank statement, tribal enrollment card or valid Arizona vehicle registration. For a full list of ID options, go to azsos.gov/elections/voters/voting-elections.

When is primary day?

Tuesday, July 30. Poll hours are 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. If you live in Maricopa County or Pima County, find your polling location on your county’s website. For any other county, visit my.arizona.vote. —Grace Dickinson
