ALZHEIMER’S OVERVIEW

Thank you beyond words for your cover story in the March 2024 issue [“Alzheimer’s: New Learnings, Rising Hope”]. The article sheds a glimmer of light on a disease that has caused much family pain throughout the world since its discovery 117 years ago. Gratitude to neurologists, biomedical research engineers, scientists, medical specialists, teachers, professors and doctors who give their life to study and attempt to “change the course of Alzheimer’s disease,” as so aptly expressed by Randall Bateman, M.D., in your article. It’ll be a valuable breakthrough to be able to diagnose Alzheimer’s definitively with a blood test.

ROBIN L. SARANTOS
MINDEN, NEVADA

As an aging health junkie, I appreciated the guidance near the end of the Alzheimer’s article, which places the emphasis on proactive prevention. I also appreciated how the first pages thoroughly describe hope for drug remedies but clearly indicate it may not be useful information for many of us and may not happen in our lifetimes. It’s clear that food and activity choices currently offer our best options for preventing and even reversing disease. Thank you for an excellent article!

FIGHTING FRAUD

I would add one great suggestion to your Fraud Watch story [“Our Experts Answer Your Fraud Questions”]: Make copies (front and back) of everything in your wallet. Keep these in a safe place apart from your wallet or purse. This way you have it all, including customer service phone numbers, in case of loss or theft.

CANINE CAREGIVERS

Thanks for your article on the value of service dogs [“Wanted: Dogs With Skills”]. In addition to emotional support pets, there are also therapy dogs. Therapy dogs go through at least eight weeks of training and can improve your health by giving emotional support. Owners are trained along with their dogs and volunteer to visit hospitals, special needs centers, schools and nursing homes.

WOMAN POWER

Wonder Woman was an excellent role model to me [Q&A: Lynda Carter]. I suffer from memory loss, but when I read your article about my favorite childhood superhero, I wished I could go back to those good old days. Although I knew she was a character on television, I was fascinated by her powers. I wanted to be just like her.

Thank you, AARP, for always writing the best articles that keep me informed and motivated.

HEALTH SAVINGS

I’d like to add something to the “Medicare Made Easy” question on health savings accounts [Your AARP]. If you’re eligible to contribute to an HSA, you’re allowed to do a once-per-lifetime distribution from your retirement account. You must first roll those funds into an IRA. Once the funds are there, you can make your onetime tax-free transfer into your HSA. You still must file IRS Form 8889 to report any distributions made during the year.

THE WAY I SEE IT

“Win the Grocery Pricing Game” gives great comparison tips, including carrying reading glasses or a magnifier to read the tiny print on the shelf tags. Here’s another: Take a photo with your cellphone. It has two advantages: (1) If the items are too high or too low on the shelf, it brings the tag to your level; and (2) you can enlarge the print, if needed.

OLDER VOTERS

Thank you to Jo Ann Jenkins for the much appreciated article “The Best Reason to Keep Voting.” It reminded me of what Bill Nye the Science Guy recently said: If you want to fight climate change, vote for people who want to protect the environment. Likewise, if you want to protect Social Security, vote for people who want to protect it. Keep up the good work.
