Photo of AARP Bulletin's September 2023 cover. The main headline says HOW WE'RE CHANGING AMERICA.

CHANGE IS GONNA COME

The cover story certainly spells out the opportunity our country faces [“How We’re Changing America,” September]. Beyond financial well-being, health care and politics lie the challenges of what we must do to change the direction of future generations. We must find opportunities to mentor the younger population to a level of commitment and service, to strengthen our future.

What an informative article about seniors and their changing world, especially the fitness section. Many of my 50+ yoga students combine pickleball with a yoga practice safely adapted and designed for aging bodies. Yoga poses help stabilize the dynamic, quick movements of pickleball and prevent injury.

POSITIVE PURPOSE

I look forward to seeing the film The Hidden Power of Purpose [“The Power of Purpose,” Your AARP]. We all must remember our own power of purpose. Purpose for many of us seniors can come in many forms. Sharing cookies with the neighbor who works, walking with a friend who needs recovery assistance, cleaning and organizing. Start small. The rewards are enormous.

EYE-OPENING

As an eye doctor, I would like to add an easy, quick and non-costly tip to your “7 Tips for Dry Eye Relief” [Your Health]. In order to keep moisture in the eyes, make sure you drink enough water each day and stay well hydrated. Eye drops, ointments, unblocking glands, and changing the home and work environment are all important, but most important is to stay well hydrated.

SOCIAL INSECURITY

I just read in the Bulletin that the projected Social Security raise is only 3 percent [“Social Security COLA Increases Smaller in 2024,” In the News]. This is outrageous when you consider the inflation rate. This won’t even counter the raises to our homeowners insurance here in Florida. Seniors are going backward at an alarming pace.

TWO THUMBS-UP

There isn’t just one story that I liked. I liked all of the information in the September 2023 issue. Congratulations to the editors for making this a really informative, interesting monthly issue. I’m already looking forward to the next one.
