How streaming TV’s new pricing works

AMAZON’S PRIME video is the latest streaming service to offer a cheaper version with commercials—a boon for bargain hunters. But you must sit through pesky ads—an average of four minutes’ worth per hour on some services and up to 10 for some Hulu programming. Also, while traditional broadcast shows (with 12 to 15 minutes of ads per hour) block out their plots to align with commercial breaks, streamers often break into shows at random intervals. Netflix promised to put ad blocks only before the titles of new movie releases. And if you watch three episodes of a show, the fourth is ad-free. If the ads annoy you, ponder the money you can save! —Thom Geier
