AARP Rocks!

What we learned from digging into online playlists

HERE AT AARP, we aren’t naive. We know that our organization’s name is often used as a synonym for “old.” But we were curious about what music is associated with AARP on music streaming services. So we conducted an informal examination. Here’s what we found.

Not surprisingly, most of these playlists are heavy on artists such as the Beatles, Billy Joel, Marvin Gaye and Bruce Springsteen. Rock and pop from the ’70s are especially popular, as that’s the music many people over 50 grew up listening to on the radio. But ’80s music is close behind—with Michael Jackson a favorite.

There’s so much Fleetwood Mac. Something about this pop-rock band defines a generation (or generations).

But hold on! There’s also a decent amount of Drake, Beyoncé, Post Malone and Taylor Swift. Studies show that the desire to explore new music fades with age, but that doesn’t hold true for all. So if you haven’t kept up with new music, those artists are a good place to dive back in. —Jeffrey Lee Puckett
