SPOTIFY Anyone can sign up for a free account with the world’s most popular music streaming service. But you’ll have ads between some songs, and you’re limited in how you can listen. While you can build playlists and save your favorite albums, you can only listen in shuffle mode, meaning songs play in a random order. You can skip up to six songs per hour.

PANDORA This service lets you listen to custom “stations” for free. Choose a favorite artist, song or genre, and it serves up similar music it thinks you will like. Watching a video ad gives you more control to choose specific songs.

DEEZER With this service’s free version, similar to Spotify’s, you’ll get ads between some songs and you’re limited to listening in shuffle mode.

FREEGAL MUSIC AND HOOPLA These platforms partner with local libraries to offer free—and ad-free—music streaming to those with library cards. The catalogs aren’t as large as those of the major streaming services, and availability may change over time. Streaming and download limits can vary, depending on your library’s subscription.
