How does AARP help people with their taxes?

Since 1968, AARP Foundation has helped over 80 million taxpayers with low to moderate income to prepare and file their taxes. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program helps ensure that older adults get the assistance they need and the refunds they deserve.

What do Tax-Aide volunteers do?

IRS-certified Tax-Aide volunteers provide free assistance online and in-person by helping to prepare tax returns, organizing paperwork, offering technical assistance, acting as interpreters and more.

Client Facilitator

Program: Tax-Aide

(In-Person or Virtually)

You will help older taxpayers feel welcome and at ease by greeting them, gathering and organizing their paperwork, and describing the tax prep process. Help ease the stress of tax season for older adults with low to moderate income. Experience is not necessary; we will provide training and IRS certification.

Requirements:

  • Be detail-oriented
  • Must attend 20 hours of provided training (held between September and January)

Time/Frequency:

  • At least four hours per week during tax season

Tax Counselor

Program: Tax-Aide

(In-Person or Virtually)

Help older adults with low to moderate income to prepare and file their tax returns online, providing them with deductions they may have missed and the refunds they deserve. Your assistance will help relieve the burden and stress of their doing their own taxes. Experience is not necessary; we will provide training and IRS certification.

Requirements:

  • Detail oriented
  • Must attend 20 hours of provided training (held between September and January)
  • Be comfortable with technology

Time/Frequency:

  • At least 4 hours per week during tax season
