Help Older Adults Get Tax Breaks and Refunds

Since 1968, AARP Foundation Tax-Aide has helped over 80 million taxpayers to file their returns. This year, nearly 28,000 Tax-Aide volunteers helped secure almost $1.3 billion in total refunds for nearly 1.7 million people. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is the nation’s largest volunteer-based free tax assistance and preparation service.

As a Tax-Aide volunteer, you’ll receive training and support with IRS-certification, learn new skills, and connect with people in your community while giving back. There's a variety of volunteer roles at nearly 3,500 sites nationwide and also flexible virtual opportunities. Whatever your skill set, there’s a role for you! Volunteer Roles

Please note: AARP Foundation Tax-Aide service is offered nationwide either in-person or virtually based on location, pandemic spread, and volunteer availability. Please explore these virtual or in-person opportunities to make a difference and volunteer safely.


Client Facilitator

Program: Tax-Aide

(In-Person or Virtually)

You will help older taxpayers feel welcome and at ease by greeting them, gathering and organizing their paperwork, and describing the tax prep process. Help ease the stress of tax season for older adults with low to moderate income. 


Tax Counselor

Program: Tax-Aide

(In-Person or Virtually)

You will help older adults with low to moderate income prepare and file their tax returns online, providing them with deductions they may have missed and the refunds they deserve. Your assistance will help relieve the burden and stress of their doing their own taxes. Experience is not necessary; we will provide training and IRS certification.


Technology Coordinator

Program: Tax-Aide

(In-Person or Virtually)

You will manage computer equipment, ensure taxpayer data is secure, and provide technical assistance to volunteers. 


Leadership and Administrative Volunteer

Program: Tax-Aide

(In-Person or Virtually)

You will make sure program operations run smoothly, manage volunteers, and maintain quality control.


Communications Coordinator

Program: Tax-Aide

(In-Person or Virtually)

You will help with promoting the program to prospective volunteers and taxpayers. 


Bilingual Interpreter

Program: Tax-Aide

(In-Person or Virtually)

Speak a second language? We have a big demand for bilingual speakers in all roles, especially dedicated interpreters who can assist other volunteers.
