Toyota Recalls 1 Million Vehicles Over Airbag Concerns

Toyota has issued a recall for about 1 million vehicles over concerns they may short-circuit and lead to issues with the passenger-side airbag.

The recall affects six Toyota vehicle types and five types of Lexus cars manufactured between 2020 and 2022.

The vehicles’ sensor system may have been improperly manufactured, leading to a short circuit in the front passenger seat, Toyota said. As a result, the airbags may not deploy correctly in certain crashes, increasing the risk of injury.

Toyota plans to notify owners of the vehicles involved by the middle of February. Toyota and Lexus dealers will inspect the sensors and replace them, if necessary, at no cost to owners.

The recalled vehicles:

Toyota

  • Avalon, Avalon Hybrid (2020-2021)
  • Camry, Camry Hybrid (2020-2022)
  • Corolla (2020-2021)
  • Highlander, Highlander Hybrid (2020-2021)
  • RAV 4, RAV 4 Hybrid (2020-2021)
  • Sienna Hybrid (2021)

Lexus

  • ES250 (2021)
  • ES300H (2020-2022)
  • ES350 (2020-2021)
  • RX350 (2020-2021)
  • RX450h (2020-2021)

Owners can check if their car is recalled by visiting toyota.com/recall or nhtsa.gov/recall and entering their vehicle identification number (VIN) or license plate information.

Recall on Toyota Corolla Cross models

Toyota also recalled certain 2022-2023 models of the Corolla Cross, affecting about 12,600 cars, because inspections of the car for a previous recall may not have identified the remedy required.

“Without the remedy, the front passenger airbag may not deploy as designed due to a manufacturing error in the instrument panel where the airbag is located. As a result, the vehicles may not meet certain federal requirements, and there could be an increased risk of injury in a crash,” Toyota said in the recall announcement.

Until the affected vehicles are inspected, the company advises against anyone sitting in the front passenger seat.
