Toyota is recalling about 280,000 SUVs and pickup trucks in the U.S. because a transmission problem can allow them to creep forward, the company announced.
“Certain parts of the transmission may not immediately disengage when the vehicle is shifted to the neutral position. This can allow some engine power to continue to be transferred to the wheels and can allow the vehicle to inadvertently creep forward at a low speed when it is on a flat surface and no brakes are applied, leading to an increased risk of a crash,” the company said in a Feb. 21 statement.
The recall covers certain Toyota Tundra, Sequoia and Lexus LX 600 vehicles from the 2022-2024 model years. Owners will be notified of the issue by late April, the company said, and dealers will update the transmission software to repair the problem at no cost.
Toyota didn’t disclose whether it knew of any crashes or injuries caused by the transmission issue.
Owners can visit Toyota.com/recall or nhtsa.gov/recalls to determine whether they are affected. The sites need your vehicle identification number (VIN) or license plate information to determine whether a vehicle is affected by the recall.
The company also said owners can contact the Toyota Brand Engagement Center at 800-331-4331, or the Lexus Brand Engagement Center at 800-255-3987, if they have questions.
