Amazon’s Prime Video streamer is getting into the Halloween mood with thrillers such as House of Spoils and the Peter Capaldi-led The Devil’s Hour — as well as a baking competition show that aims for cakes so creepy that you might be tempted to desert them rather than dessert them. There are plenty of other tasty options, from a new version of Black Beauty set on an urban horse farm to a game show in which NFL star (and Taylor Swift beau) Travis Kelce tests your knowledge of all the stuff you should have learned back in elementary school.

Here are our picks for the best of Prime’s fall arrivals.

Coming Oct. 3

House of Spoils

Oscar winner Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) plays an ambitious chef who decides to open her first restaurant on a remote estate. This is a film from the Blumhouse horror canon, so in addition to the usual challenges (renovation hiccups, a shady investor, self-doubt), she must face the demon spirit of the home’s previous owner. Carmy in The Bear had it easy.

Killer Cakes

Speaking of Blumhouse, the studio is also producing a two-part reality competition show in which bakers team up with Hollywood special-effects artists to create some truly horrifying cakes (at least in terms of appearance). If Ariana DeBose’s House of Spoils character needs a pastry chef, she should definitely look here. Scream alum Matthew Lillard hosts.

Coming Oct. 10

Citadel: Diana

This six-part Italian-language series is one of several planned international spin-offs from the Russo Brothers’ Citadel (which starred Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas as globe-trotting agents for the Citadel spy agency doing battle with the wicked Manticore). This one is set in 2030, when an undercover agent for the now-destroyed Citadel (Matilda De Angelis) works as a mole for Manticore while seeking a way to escape. Expect more twisty plotting and high-adrenaline action scenes.

Coming Oct. 15

Beyond Black Beauty, Season 1

The classic tale of a girl and her horse gets a 2024 spin when a headstrong teenage equestrian with Olympic dreams is uprooted from her Belgian home and stable for a new life in urban Baltimore. She’s furious about the move — until she bonds with an equally willful horse she dubs Black Beauty.

Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity? Season 1

Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce takes a break from the gridiron (and backstage at Taylor Swift’s “Eras” tour) to host this series that updates the classic Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? In this version, grownup contestants can win up to $100,000 if they answer 11 questions culled from the elementary school curriculum — with the assistance of celebs Nikki Glaser, Nicole Byer and former NFL star Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson.

Coming Oct. 17

Brothers

Four years after releasing the clever and heartfelt Andy Samberg-Cristin Milioti rom-com Palm Springs, director Max Barbakow returns with a comedic crime caper starring Josh Brolin, 56, and Peter Dinklage, 55, as felonious twin brothers (fraternal, presumably) who plan one last heist together before sailing into comfortable middle age. The cast includes a nearly unrecognizable Glenn Close, 77, Marisa Tomei, 59, Brendan Fraser, 55, and an orangutan named Samuel.

Coming Oct. 17

The Pradeeps of Pittsburgh, Season 1

Lost alum Naveen Andrews, 55, stars in this half-hour sitcom about a business executive from India who uproots his medical worker wife (Sindhu Vee, 55) and three school-age kids to seek their fortunes in Pittsburgh. Let’s just say they face a culture shock as big as the Taj Mahal.

The Devil’s Hour, Season 2

Peter Capaldi, 66, is back as a serial killer who “remembers” the future in this time-warped thriller. Jessica Raine (Call the Midwife) returns as an insomniac social worker who spent the first season chasing Capaldi’s Gideon and realizes there may be forces at work larger than she realized.

Coming Oct. 24

Like a Dragon: Yakuza, Season 1

In recent years, The Last of Us and Fallout have proved that shows based on video games can actually be good. Like a Dragon, based on a Sega game released in 2005, follows a former member of the mafia-like Japanese yakuza underworld who is drawn into an elaborate conspiracy involving his former clan and best friend.

The Pasta Queen, Season 1

Nadia Caterina Munno, an Italian-born chef who comes from a clan so famous for its pasta that it’s been dubbed the “Macaronis,” has developed a loyal following on TikTok for her clips of whipping up noodle-forward recipes in the kitchen. In this series, she travels through her native land and explores the essential ingredients of classic dishes from different regions.

Buy It Now, Season 1

Talk about corporate synergy! In this competition series, hosted by J.B. Smoove, entrepreneurs secure a spot for their product in Amazon’s Buy It Now store. Competitors get 90 seconds to pitch a group of 100 potential customers. If they approve, the competitors face a panel of Amazon execs and business all-stars, who choose one winner each show for a (forgive the pun) prime spot on the online retail behemoth.
