Video: Creating a Place From a Vacant Space

Learn about this winning project from a 2017 AARP Community Challenge grantee

LOCATION: Buffalo, New York
GRANTEE: Buffalo Urban Renewal Agency

Transforming an empty lot in the Fruit Belt neighborhood into an event space was a team effort. AARP New York, the Buffalo Urban Renewal Agency, the office of Mayor Byron Brown, the placemaking firm Team Better Block and area residents worked together to place picnic tables, seating, planters, solar-powered lights and even a portable performance stage. In honor of the community’s name, participants also painted a fruit-inspired crosswalk and mural.
