Video: Building a Los Angeles Park for All Ages

Learn about this winning project from a 2019 AARP Community Challenge grantee

LOCATION: Los Angeles, California
GRANTEE: Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust

Golden Age Park is located in the city's Westlake/MacArthur Park neighborhood. Until 2019, the plot in the otherwise densely-developed area was vacant for nearly 30 years. Based on a design process led by community members, the space now contains a community garden with raised-bed planters, shaded picnic and gathering areas, walking paths, public art, native-plant landscaping, and both a children's play area and outdoor fitness equipment for older adults. An AARP Community Challenge grant funded the installation of a communal tool shed, the exercise equipment, planters, picnic tables and barbeque pit.

  • The AARP Community Challenge funds "quick-action" projects that build momentum for local change to improve livability for people of all ages.
