Financial health, retirement savings, Social Security, and tax and budget policy.

ABOUT

Gary Koenig is the interim senior vice president and director, AARP Public Policy Institute and vice president of financial security. The Public Policy Institute is AARP’s “think tank” and serves as a trusted resource that advances innovative, evidence-based, and actionable solutions that empower people to choose how they live as they age. The work of PPI extends across financial security, health, and family, home and community. Koenig’s own work focuses on helping people achieve and maintain financial security as they age, and encompasses Social Security and retirement savings policy, financial health, and innovative approaches to increasing lifetime income.

Since 2016, he has directed the development of the AARP strategy on savings and financial planning, the goal of which is to drive better financial health by influencing public policy, private industry, and personal behavior. That strategy reflects the understanding that economic security in old age is influenced by financial stability during one’s working years. Koenig also has helped lead the development of AARP Money MapTM, an online platform launched in 2019 that empowers users to take control of their finances through a unified experience of tools, resources, and opportunities to learn more about effectively managing their money.

Before joining AARP, Koenig worked as an economist for the Congressional Joint Committee on Taxation for 13 years, where he specialized in employer-provided pensions and retirement plans. In addition, Koenig is a member of the National Academy of Social Insurance and serves as a board member for the Employee Benefits Research Institute.

He holds a master’s degree in economics from Duke University.
