The AARP Vermont State Office commissioned this poll to gauge the opinions of residents age 35-plus on their electric utilities.  Most Vermonters have expressed concern about utility costs and stress the need for better ratepayer representation in regulating power companies and setting rates, according to survey data.

Key findings include the following:

  • 71% support an independent ratepayer advocate.

  • 48% do not believe their interests are being considered when rates increase.

  • About one-third would vote for a candidate who supports the implementation of an independent ratepayer advocate.

The AARP 2016 Vermont Utility Study was a telephone study of 500 registered voters in Vermont who are age 35 and older. Interviews were conducted August 29 and September 8, 2016.  For more information contact Cassandra Cantave at CCantave@aarp.org.
