AARP Solutions Forum - Families Caring for an Aging America: The Current Landscape and Opportunities for the Future

AARP’s Public Policy Institute (PPI) hosted a Solutions Forum on December 1, 2016 featuring a discussion of The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s consensus report Families Caring for An Aging America. The highlights reel is available for viewing online.

The recent report calls for the new presidential administration to take immediate steps to address health, economic, and social issues facing family caregivers of older Americans. This consensus report examines what is known about the nation’s family caregivers of older adults, and calls for a transformation in the policies and practices to address their needs. The forum concluded with a call to action.  

Hear from the Solutions Forum expert panelists to learn more about the issues discussed and the report’s key findings and recommendations. This three-part presentation includes a keynote address by the Chair of the National Academies’ Committee on Family Caregiving for Older Adults; a family caregiver’s story; and two panel discussions with leading national family caregiving and health policy experts.   

Part I: Welcome & Opening Remarks are given by Susan C. Reinhard, Senior Vice President and Director of AARP’s Public Policy Institute and Center to Champion Nursing in America. Rita Choula, Senior Advisor at AARP’s PPI, shares her own personal family caregiving journey. The keynote address is provided by Richard Schulz, Chair, National Academies’ Committee on Family Caregiving for Older Adults; Director, University Center for Social and Urban Research, University of Pittsburgh. 

Part 2: Lynn Friss Feinberg, Senior Strategic Policy Advisor, AARP’s PPI, and a member of the Consensus Committee,  moderates \the Consensus Committee Panel discussion, which focuses on what a transformed system would look like in health care, long-term services and supports, and in today’s workplace.

Part 3: Susan C. Reinhard, Senior Vice President and Director of AARP’s Public Policy Institute and Center to Champion Nursing in America, hosts the Reactor Panel which discusses the report’s opportunities and challenges and how best to make a lasting impact.
