Tees, tanks, shirts, tunics and blouses are true mix and match superstars. They refresh skirts, elevate jeans and give blazers and cardigans a style boost. The right top can pull together an evening outfit in minutes, wake up your face at 8 a.m. and make you look 5 pounds slimmer when your pants feel too tight. Wondering if oversized or relaxed is what you want? Whether to choose a crew, V-neck or boatneck? How about three-quarter, long or short sleeves? Are crinkle gauze and linen a summer fling or year-round shirts? Here’s all you need to know now.

1. Discover the fit that flatters your body now.

You’ve probably noticed that many women’s tops —  especially shirts and tees — are categorized as oversized, boyfriend, relaxed, classic or slim. Here’s how to choose a top in sync with your bust, body and style. Oversized or just plain old “big” is always the loosest, fullest, most generously cut style. It’s going to hide your true body shape and looks best over a narrow bottom like slim jeans or leggings. Buy your usual size. Boyfriend is sometimes used interchangeably with oversized. It’s also a loose fit but not as exaggerated — as if you borrowed a guy’s shirt. Any top billed as oversized or boyfriend is an “outie” worn like a tunic, but it can also be casually layered over a tank or tee as a shacket (shirt/jacket). To keep big tops like these from appearing too uptight or sloppy, be sure to style them. Unbutton to a V if it’s a button-down style, roll the sleeves and turn up the cuffs (but keep it imperfect not precisely cuffed). Relaxed fits are eased through the torso and are the new “normal.” They often feature a dropped or raglan sleeve and feel like you’ve gone up one size minus the unwanted drag of excess fabric at the hem and sleeves. Many women 50-plus now find a relaxed fit more flattering (and forgiving) to wear than what used to be a classic fit. Classic tops nowadays have a straight, updated-preppy fit. They work if your overall style is classic, meaning you often tuck in tops and prefer a neat, trim silhouette. Classics partner best with full silhouettes like wide-leg pants, A-line or pleated skirts. Slim tops follow the line of the body —  especially at the bust and torso — and reveal every bump and bulge. You can do better.

Ones to consider: The J. Crew Garcon Classic Shirt in Cotton-Linen Blend Gauze in White or Majestic Sky ($63, jcrew.com), the Madewell Relaxed Button-Front Shirt in Poplin in Wide Celeste White Stripe ($77, madewell.com), the Everlane The Silky Cotton Relaxed Shirt in Pale Blue ($88, everlane.com), the Loft Striped Cotton Blend Oversized Pocket Shirt in Cobalt Current ($20, loft.com) and the Universal Thread Women’s Oversized Long Sleeve Collared Button-Down Shirt in Purple ($14, target.com).

2. Count on white shirts to brighten your looks and wardrobe.

Want to erase lines, shadows and fatigue? A crisp white shirt works the same way filters and makeup highlighter do. It freshens your face and gives a polished impression no matter what’s on the bottom. It’s why Sharon Stone famously wore one to the Oscars in 1998 and why mature celebs now make this top their go-to for photo shoots and appearances. Any style from collared button-downs to popovers, tunics and boho blouses with full sleeves works — plain, ruffled or embellished. You can’t have too many. Which fabrics work year-round? All cottons including modern no-iron versions, smooth Pima, this year’s star: breathable linen (which gets softer with washes and wear), lightweight crinkle gauze and white or ivory tops in silk and satin for a softer but equally illuminating dressy version. All elevate everything from black pants to knee- and midi-length skirts and of course jeans. They also brighten a dark neutral wardrobe and sharpen the effect of colorful bottom pieces. Great choices include the Old Navy Oversized Boyfriend Shirt in White Oxford ($18, oldnavy.gap.com), the Ann Taylor AT Weekend Linen Blend Tunic Shirt in White ($54, anntaylor.com), the Lands’ End Women’s Eyelet Split Neck Shirt in White ($59, landsend.com), the Vineyard Vines Eyelet Long Sleeve Top in White Cap ($148, vineyardvines.com) and the Nic + Zoe Flowing Ease Top in Paper White ($148, bloomingdales.com).

3. Find a better T-shirt style.

T-shirts now range from multipack drugstore crews for $12, to luxury-level versions at $50 a pop. They always add a cool look to any outfit even paired with a tailored skirt and pearls. As a fashion editor, stylist and personal shopper for women 50-plus, I know the right tees never look too boxy or too clingy or reveal bulges around the bra band, belly or waist area. The classic short-sleeve tee isn’t going anywhere, but this is a good time to get picky about necklines and your preferred sleeve length. You may decide to swap basic tees for a long- or three-quarter sleeve style and upgrade to softer cotton knits with modal or spandex. Which neckline? Crew necks like the A New Day Women’s Short Sleeve T-Shirt in White ($6, target.com) are actually the most versatile under blazers and sweaters but also look for those with a slightly wider shape (more of an oval) like the Gap Modern Crewneck Tee in Fresh White, Light Heather Grey, Black or Navy Blue ($141, gap.com), V-necks like the Hanes Originals Women’s Cotton V-Neck Tee with Long Sleeves in White, Black or Navy ($10, walmart.com) and the Banana Republic Factory Timeless T-Shirt in White, Black or Heather Gray ($15, bananarepublicfactory.gapfactory.com) flatter a full bust and elongate the neck and torso and boatneck tees (often paired with three-quarter sleeves) like the Croft & Barrow Women’s Boatneck Top in White, Black or Navy ($11, kohls.com) subtly strengthen the shoulder line to balance width at the hips. Stock up on white, black, navy or gray that go with all your bottom pieces. Don’t ignore tank tops. In high-neck styles with flattering indented armholes (that give arms a sleeker look) like the Emprella Women’s Tank Top Ribbed and Racerback in White ($11, walmart.com), they replace camisoles as layering pieces and slip easily under jackets, cardigans and sweaters … or wear a tank solo with leggings or joggers if you have firm biceps or enough attitude. Just skip any tee or tank with the words crop, fitted, short or shrunken.

4. Create a tuck or untuck plan.

Never leave the bottom line to chance. The biggest problem when dressing in tops and bottoms is figuring out how to deal with waistline and belly/rear issues. Some tops are hip length and can be worn out or in; bodysuits are clearly designed for a tucked-in look with high-waist pants and jeans; and then there is a third group — tunics and popovers — that are permanently on the untucked list. Check your bottom pieces and get strategic about your need to tuck or not to tuck before you fall in love with a top. Longer lengths don’t always provide clear descriptions of how long they are so check the rear and side view photos for signs like front zip coverage and rear-view-hiding hems. Knot front blouses with a blouson effect are one new untuck solution although you can DIY with any button-front shirt — just knot the front at the waist and leave the back be — for a hi-low half-tuck effect. Try the Everlane The Long-Sleeve Supima Square Neck Bodysuit in Black or White ($45, everlane.com), the Lands’ End No Iron Banded Collar Popover Shirt in Chicory Blue Stripe ($66, landsend.com), the Zara Women Knotted Linen Blend Shirt ($46, zara.com/us) and the Simply Vera Vera Wang Women’s Knot-Front Roll-Tab Shirt in Pete Rose, Black or Black Floral ($34, kohls.com).

5. Match dark tops to bottoms for an instantly slimming effect.

Yes, white tops brighten but for a slimmer look fast, nothing beats a head-to-toe one-color look of matching or nearly matching tops and bottoms. All black is of course the easiest. However, navy has the same depth as black and you’ll get a monochromatic effect wearing navy with black or navy with dark wash blue jeans. To amp up the flattery, look for tops with some fullness at the sleeves, relaxed fit or a longer hemline to wear untucked like the White House Black Market Long-Sleeve Soft Shirt in Black or Officer Blue ($67, whitehouseblackmarket.com), the Banana Republic Factory Volume-Sleeve Blouse in Black or Preppy Navy ($35, bananarepublicfactory.gapfactory.com), the Favorite Daughter The Date Blouse Bodysuit in Black ($198, anthropologie.com), the 1.State Women’s Shirred Long-Sleeve Button Cuff Blouse in Rich Black ($89, macys.com) and the Gap Factory Gauze Big Shirt in Black ($24 gapfactory.com).

6. Buy “situation” tops not trends.

Think of special tops as the eye-catching icing on your daily fashion “cupcake” (and the jeans, skirts or pants below as the supportive but-not-as-delicious cake). You’ll stand out in the crowd, dress up without a fuss and show off your personality. Keep the above five tips in mind, because here’s the hard cold truth. There are plenty of decorative tops that don’t flatter mature bodies. Again, pass on anything that says “crop” (there are a lot of these). I guarantee you’ll be yanking a crop top down all day or night and cringing every time you move. Also veto tiny flutter and cap sleeves that emphasize the upper arms (and not in a good way), peplum blouses with elastic waists (always too short-waisted for grownup figures), baby doll styles (they look like maternity tops) and flavor-of-the-month fads like extended shoulders, sheer blouses, open backs and plunge necklines. My advice when going for a “special effects” top? For a sexy look opt for an off-the-shoulder style. For every other situation — from dinner out to a neighborhood get-together or a festive party — stick to a top shape you love but make more of a statement with a rich standout color, bold stripes, a fabulous floral or animal print. You’ll wear it again and again. Next year too! Great choices include the Jessica London Women’s Plus Size Hi-Low Linen Tunic in Tropical Melon ($40, target.com), the Nine West Bracelet Sleeve Off The Shoulder Top in Mineral Black ($26, kohls.com), the Chico’s 3/4 Sleeve Perfect Tee in African Violet ($46, chicos.com), the Eloquii Preppy Striped Button Down in Black ($80, eloquii.com) and the Talbots Side Button Linen Band Collar Popover-Cross Dye in Deep Blue ($100, talbots.com).
