After Rachel proudly described her first actual culinary project as “a layer of ladyfingers, then a layer of jam, then custard, raspberries, more ladyfingers, then beef sautéed with peas and onions,” Ross and Joey decided to investigate how it happened. It turned out the pages of her cookbook had gotten stuck together and she’d made half an English trifle and half a shepherd’s pie. Their reviews were mixed: Ross declared, “It tastes like feet,” while Joey was more appreciative. “What’s not to like?” he reasoned as he scarfed it down. “Custard, good. Jam, good. Meat, good!”

Monica was the queen of the two-syllable exclamation, especially “I know!,” while “we were on a break” will forever be associated with Ross. “She’s your lobster” was Phoebe’s way of telling Ross he would wind up with Rachel in the long run. “Could I be wearing any more clothes?” was actually said by Joey, who was mocking Chandler’s tendency to put the emphasis on the wrong word. He did it while wearing his roommate’s entire wardrobe at once (while going commando) after Chandler hid his clothes.

After hooking up in London, Monica and Chandler hid their new relationship. However, Joey pieced it together after a call from an Atlantic City hotel about an eyelash curler left behind in Chandler’s room and overhearing Monica ask Rachel to borrow hers. Rachel was next to discover the secret after overhearing Monica tell Chandler that she was going to claim she was doing laundry as a cover for getting together with him that night. Later, Phoebe spied them making out from “Ugly Naked Guy’s” apartment. Ross was the last member of the gang to find out. He saw them going at it through his window. It happened at a really unfortunate moment, however: He was about to get his job at the museum back when he suddenly screamed, “Get off my sister!” in front of his boss.

During Season 1, the Dirty Dancing actress guest starred as Rachel’s former best friend, Mindy, who, as it turned out, was sleeping with her ex-fiancé, Barry. However, Grey didn’t return for Barry and Mindy’s wedding in Season 2. Mindy was played by actress Jana Marie Hupp in that episode.

Poor Gunther never got the girl (and very much resented Ross, who did). He never got into the inner circle, either, though the gang did invite him to some social events. But when actor James Michael Tyler died of cancer in October 2021, Jennifer Aniston paid tribute, writing, “Friends would not have been the same without you.”
