I bet you’re already wondering what the beauty and style universe has in store for next year. The very practical and flattering Coastal Grandmother remains one of 2022’s best trends and it’s still going strong for the 50-plus crowd. (As opposed to, shall we say, Barbiecore — the crazy all-pink look usually reserved for a Barbie doll!) Let’s be honest: The beauty and fashion business thrives on change, and that’s being driven now by millennials and Gen Z and sites like TikTok and Instagram. It’s still early days, but here are eight on the to-try list that make sense for grownups:
1. Something magenta … or red, fuchsia or raspberry
The Pantone Color Institute always creates a “color of the year” and 2023’s big forecast is Viva Magenta, a purple-red hue. Color-trending is one of those weird pop phenomena that turns up in everything from fashion to design. While you’ll see it all over retail stores soon, it’s already showing up in nail polish and sweaters. Magenta not your color? Try raspberry or cherry-red, two blue-based sister hues.
2. Airy tops with lace and tulle
At first glance these peekaboo blouses seem unwearable, but the high necks and long sleeves have a Victorian vibe that’s prim enough to wear. Slip one over a tank or bodysuit — not a bra — for a subtle, sophisticated glimpse of skin.
3. Skin-like makeup
Authentic-looking face makeup that improves your complexion with a dewy glow and a realistic tint that doesn’t attempt to be full-coverage is going full-steam ahead. What began two years ago as a niche off-shoot to tinted moisturizer has become the norm as better skin care liberates women from traditional long-wear face makeup with a minimalist attitude.
4. Rosy blush
While many women 50-plus already know the brightening power of a touch of cheek color, a new “cold girl” cheek is popular right now. To get the look, simply dab a little extra rosy blush high on the apples of your cheeks for an "I just took a chilly walk outside" glow. Sure, gemstone and metallic makeup are on TikTok too — along with stick-on jeweled eye studs, bleached brows and bright eye shadows — but blush is the trend that makes sense for us. Look for creams, which flatter mature skin better than powders.
