Move aside, angels. Supermodel Tyra Banks has her wings back.
After a near 20-year absence, the America’s Next Top Model co-creator and talk show host walked the runway Tuesday for the “brand new” Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in sparkly black leggings, glittery bustier and a silver cape, proving once again that women 50 and older have still got it.
“You are… Never too young to SMiZE. Never too old to DREAM,” Banks, 50, posted on Instagram, prior to her catwalk comeback. “As I walk, think about YOUR dreams, what YOU want to accomplish. That thing you’ve been doubting about yourself. That thing you’re not sure you are confident enough to accomplish.”
Banks was joined at the splashy promotional event — the brand’s first after a six-year absence — by other winged beauties, iconic model Kate Moss, 50, and former first lady of France, model Carla Bruni, 56, both making their Victoria’s Secret debut. (Bruni joked to Page Six, that it was her first “and probably last” show.)
The lingerie extravaganza, a fixture from 1995 to 2018, was cancelled by the company in 2019 due to low ratings and a backlash surrounding the show’s lack of diversity and sexism. But in May 2024, the company announced on Instagram a surprise return to the famed runway show. “The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is BACK and will reflect who we are today, plus everything you know and love — the glamour, runway, wings, musical entertainment, and more!”
The New York show, streamed on Amazon Prime and other social media sites, featured for the first time an all-women lineup, including music legend, Cher, 78, who closed out the show with her hits “Strong Enough” and “Believe.”
Banks, one of the original VS models who walked in nine shows before she retired to explore new ventures, told Harper’s Bazaar that she felt the world has changed enough that a runway return made sense. “I can be a businesswoman and have my ice cream company and speak at business institutions and get my certificate from my Harvard course and teach at Stanford and, yes, be a Victoria’s Secret model."
