Contaminated onions have been identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as the likely cause of a salmonella outbreak that has infected 1.012 people across 47 states since June 19, resulting in widespread recalls. (Read more about the multistate salmonella outbreak.) Here's a list of grocery stores that have stocked recalled onions as well as prepared foods made with onions. If you suspect that you purchased a recalled product, click on the retailer's name to be directed to more information. All affected onions and prepared foods should be discarded or returned to the store where purchased for a full refund (unless otherwise indicated).
Aldi
Products: Red, white, sweet and yellow onions supplied by Onions 52
Locations: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. (Sweet onions are only affected in Arkansas, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas.)
Food Lion
Products: Jumbo red onions sold between May 24 and July 31. Jumbo white, jumbo yellow and 3-pound bags of yellow onions sold between May 24 and Aug. 1. Sliced red onions and stir-fry vegetables sold between May 24 and July 31. The onions were supplied by Thomson International.
Locations: Select stores in North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia
Fred Meyer, Fry's Food Stores and Smith's
Products: Deli cheese dips and spreads sold between May 15 and Aug. 6 that may include red onions supplied by Onions 52 and Thomson International
Locations: Not specified; all three retailers are owned by Kroger.
