JFK: Personal Portraits From a Public Life

Jacques Lowe provided the nation with insider access to the president and his family

Jacques Lowe served as John F. Kennedy's presidential campaign photographer and then as his personal family photographer until 1962. Over the course of their collaboration, Lowe captured more than 40,000 images of the Kennedy family, both at work and at play.

Lowe stored his negatives in a fire-proof vault at the World Trade Center, and on Sept. 11, 2001 his entire archive was lost except for prints stored elsewhere.

The Newseum, a journalism museum in Washington, DC that closed in 2019, restored the images to museum quality and hosted an exhibition of the revamped material. In 2021, the Briscoe Center for American History at The University of Texas at Austin acquired the Jacques Lowe Photographic Archive.

The photos in this slideshow are from the 2014 Newseum exhibit.
