Home vacation rentals are nothing new. About 58 million travelers in the United States book them each year through the main global platforms, Airbnb and Vrbo. They can be an interesting and family-friendly alternative to hotels, providing options to sample non-tourist neighborhoods, quiet and cozy places to truly get away, even some very innovative “homes” miles away from home. If you are looking for adventure, we’ve got some ideas.
Creekside Treehouse, Cosby, Tennessee

Nothing says cozy mountain escape like this private tree house for two just 20 miles from Gatlinburg. The studio-style digs include a queen bed and full bath as well as a kitchen with all the basics for cooking. At night, the tree house’s hot tub, on an adjoining deck, is the perfect spot to relax. While you’re here: Spend days hiking within Great Smoky Mountains National Park (the hike to Laurel Falls is particularly rewarding and easy to access), whitewater rafting along the Upper or Lower Pigeon River and sampling local brews at Sugarlands Distilling Co. and Smoky Mountain Brewery. Note: Spring through fall are the most appealing seasons to stay here, with the autumn leaves putting on their brashest display from around mid-October through early November.
Tiny Swan Home, Orlando, Florida
2 bedrooms, 2 bath, sleeps 6
Rates start at $114
This 400-square-foot lakeside gem packs a lot of personality in a small space. The thoughtful design accommodates six people via two lofted bedrooms with queen beds and a fold-out couch in the (surprisingly spacious) living room. The kitchen is also a good size, but look for the wine fridge next to the couch. Located in the quiet neighborhood of Princeton–Silver Star, the tiny home has direct access to the lake; kayaks, paddleboards and fishing gear are all included with the rental (tip: Keep an eye out for turtles and otters when you’re by the water). The location is also prime for exploring Orlando’s popular attractions, including Universal Orlando Resort and Universal Studios less than eight miles away.
While you’re here: Admire stunning artwork and explore thought-provoking exhibits at the Orlando Museum of Art — a five-minute drive from the rental. Or try the nearby Orlando Science Center for more interactive, family-friendly exhibits including an eco-friendly tiny green home.
Caboose in the Redwoods, Cupertino, California
3 beds, 1 bath, 4 guests
Rates start at $190
Under the towering redwood trees outside California’s Silicon Valley, near the towns of Cupertino and Saratoga, this cherry red Southern Pacific caboose makes for the most cheerful of accommodations. The surprisingly spacious interior comfortably sleeps four guests (invite your grandkids or kids!) between a queen bed and two single beds on the main floor and loft.
Disembark from the ’boose onto your small patio with a grill for barbecuing (there’s a full kitchen inside, too) surrounded by nature and perhaps a few passing chickens, cats and dogs that belong to the owners, who live nearby.
While you’re here: Check out the wineries and restaurants around downtown Saratoga (Mountain Winery is a favorite for tastings and outdoor concerts) or try the easy to moderate hikes within the Older Open Space Preserve for sweeping views of the Santa Clara Valley.
