If you’re searching for that diamond in the deep rough, here’s a gem in each state that you can play for under $100:

Alabama

The Short Course at Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Grand National

Opelika, Alabama

The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail is a golfer’s dream —a collection of highly regarded courses at 11 sites across Alabama. While most courses on the trail cost just over $100, you can play the Short Course at Grand National for around $50. The 18-hole, par 3, with its creative layout mainly along the lake, is a great way to experience the top-rate facility at the Grand National in a more casual setting.

Alaska

spinner image moose run golf course
Moose Run’s Hill Course and Creek Course make up the America's northernmost 36-hole golf facility.
The Henebrys

Moose Run Golf Course

Anchorage, Alaska

The country’s largest state has the fewest courses and the shortest golf season. According to golf.com, just eight of the 22 courses in the state have 18 holes, and they’re all public. But the state has something unique to offer golfers: the possibility of having to wait for moose to clear the green before lining up a putt. Moose Run is Alaska’s only 36-hole facility and has stunning views of the Chugach Mountains as its backdrop. Green fees are $54 or less.

Arizona

spinner image papago golf course in arizona
At Papago Golf Club, players can immerse themselves in the thrill of the game while soaking in the beauty of the desert landscape, making every round at Papago a memorable experience.
Dave Sansom

Papago Golf Course

Phoenix, Arizona

The Phoenix-Scottsdale area has become a golf mecca and hosts “The Greatest Show on Grass” – the wild-and-crazy Waste Management Phoenix Open. While there are plenty of public options in the area, Papago is right next to the airport and is one of the most affordable. You can get an afternoon tee time for under $100. The course, home to the Arizona State University men’s and women’s golf teams, features spectacular views of the Papago Buttes and Camelback Mountain.

Arkansas

Cypress Creek Golf Club

Cabot, Arkansas

This par-72 course outside of Little Rock has Zoysia grass and can accommodate all skill levels – with a more than 2,000-yard difference between the gold (7,392) and green (5,218) tees. Rates range from just $55 to $67.

California

Pacific Grove Golf Links

Pacific Grove, California

With over 900 courses, California has more golfing options than any other state except Florida. But it’s hard to beat Pacific Grove when it comes to views and affordability. With beautiful Cypress trees, glimpses of Monterey Bay and an ocean-side back nine, this links course offers a lot of bang for its buck. From Monday to Thursday, green fees are $62.

Colorado

Devil's Thumb Golf Course

Delta, Colorado

The prairie-style links course surrounded by Adobe Hills is at the base of the world’s highest flat-top mountain—Grand Mesa—and has been described by some golfers as like playing on the moon. Mondays and Fridays are Senior Days, costing only $40 for 18 holes.

Connecticut

Wintonbury Hills Golf Course

Bloomfield, Connecticut

The par-70 layout with a mix of links-style and tree-lined holes was famed golf course architect Pete Dye’s first design in New England. Despite being a hilly course, it’s very walkable, and seniors can play for a mere $15 on weekdays.

Delaware

Odessa National Golf Club

Townsend, Delaware

While the par-72 course is a little on the shorter side —playing 6,961 from the black tees and 5,693 from the gold —the bunker placement and doglegs make for a challenging round for all skill levels. On weekdays, seniors can play for $42.

Florida

Fort Myers Country Club

Fort Myers, Florida

Golf.com ranked each state for its golfiness, and Florida took the crown. It has four PGA Tour events at public–access courses and many golf legends — including Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, and Rory McIlroy —have homes there.

While there are more than 1,000 courses in the state to choose from, “The Fort,” as locals call it, is unique for keeping some of its old charm —it opened in 1917. Don’t be fooled by “Country Club” being in its name. The course is part of Fort Myers’ Parks and Recreation Department. You can walk an afternoon round for as little as $20.

Georgia

Chateau Elan Golf Club

Braselton, Georgia

The Chateau Elan offers three courses —including a nine-hole, par-3 walking course with lengths ranging from under 100 yards to over 200 yards —that are set among 4,000 acres of vineyards. While you can find afternoon tee times for under $100 at the two 18-hole courses, the executive course can be played anytime for as little as $25.

Hawaii

spinner image wailua golf course in hawaii
Wailua’s 17th hole, a 173-yard par 3, is its signature hole with the Pacific Ocean as a backdrop. Wailua Golf Course was first built as a 9-hole golf course in the 1930s; the second 9 holes were added in 1961.
Billy Satterfield/Golf Course Gurus

Wailua Municipal Golf Course

Kauai County, Hawaii

It’s hard to be in Hawaii and not have stunning views, and this oceanfront municipal course has plenty of them. It’s only $60 for non-residents to play a weekend or holiday round —which is worth it for the scenery alone — and there are senior and super senior (75 or older) rates for Kaua'i residents at $15 or less.

Idaho

Jug Mountain Ranch Golf Course

Valley County, Idaho

With miles of mountain bike trails, an event space for family reunions and weddings, and a clubhouse restaurant with a scenic outdoor setting, golfing is just one way to take in the picturesque setting at the ranch beneath Jughandle Mountain’s 8,310-foot peak. The course has weekend senior rates under $70.

Illinois

Ravisloe Country Club

Homewood, Illinois

World-renowned golf course designer Donald Ross renovated the 123-year-old course with deep bunkers and challenging greens in 1916. Nearly a century later, a veterinary surgeon purchased Ravisloe in February 2009 and opened it to the public. It lives up to its billing as “a public course with a country club experience.” You can find tee times for $50 or less.

Indiana

spinner image pfau golf course in indiana

The Pfau Course at Indiana University

Bloomington, Indiana

Located on the campus of Indiana University, the Pfau Course opened in 2020. It was designed by architect Steve Smyers and Fuzzy Zoeller, a two-time major winner born and raised in Indiana. The par-71 design features 147 bunkers and has six tee boxes ranging from 4,586 to 7,908 yards. Green fees are $80 on weekdays and $95 from Friday to Sunday, but check the Hoosiers’ football schedule for pricing, as premium rates may apply to home football weekends.

Iowa

Blue Top Ridge Golf Course

Riverside, Iowa

The Rees Jones-designed course has beautiful views overlooking rivers and artificial lakes. Located at Riverside Casino and Golf Resort, the facilities offer plenty of food, entertainment and lodging options to make a weekend out of your golf trip. While rounds cost up to $95, seniors over 60 can play Sunday to Tuesday for only $68.

Kansas

Buffalo Dunes Golf Course

Garden City, Kansas

The municipal course that opened in 1976 has a sprinkling of trees, which makes for a wide-open layout that offers little protection from the strong Kansas wind. With green fees only $30 for 18 holes (without cart) on weekends and holidays, it’s hard to beat the price.

The course also offers reasonably priced annual membership options for seniors over 65, starting at $360. And Buffalo Dunes is only getting better, with a renovation plan set to be completed in 2026 to mark the course’s 50th anniversary.

Kentucky

Heritage Hill Golf Club

Shepherdsville, Kentucky

The par-72 course, located just outside Louisville, is surrounded by dense woods and is partially framed by the Salt River. It features bentgrass greens and zoysia grass tees and fairways. Weekend rounds can be played for $65 or less. Plus, for birdwatching enthusiasts, Heritage Hill is home to three bald eagles.

Louisiana

Copper Mill Golf Club

Zachary, Louisiana

The links-style course opened in 2004 and has renovated Bermuda greens. Copper Mills has a unique layout with three par 3s, three par 4s and three par 5s on each nine — and it mixes in two 600-yard par 5s with a couple drivable par 4s. You can find a tee time for under $60.

Maine

spinner image sugarloaf golf course in maine
As Maine's premier golf destination, Sugarloaf Golf Club is a must-play for any golfer. The Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed course offers stunning panoramic mountain views and an unforgettable experience from first tee to final putt.
The Henebrys

Sugarloaf Golf Course

Carrabassett Valley, Maine

The mountainous course in the Carrabassett Valley, with the Appalachians as its backdrop, has stunning views. The thick woods lining the fairways can make it quite challenging. Golf Digest has rated Sugarloaf the top course in Maine 28 times since 1985, according to its website. You can find weekday tee times under $100.

Maryland

Bulle Rock Golf Course

Havre de Grace, Maryland

At the Pete Dye-designed course, which hosted five LGPA Championships, you get professional-level conditions and facilities for a public-course price— with tee times available for under $70 during the offseason and discounts for residents. Bulle Rock has a challenging layout, well-maintained fairways and quick greens.

Massachusetts

Crestview Country Club

Agawam, Massachusetts

The semi-private course, which has limited membership but is open to the public, has hosted the PGA Tour, U.S. Amateur qualifiers, and the LPGA’s Friendly's Classic in the late 1990s. With the spectacular views of the Pioneer Valley, the venue also hosts weddings. For seniors, weekday tee times are available for $36 to walk and $54 to ride.

Michigan

Sweetgrass Golf Course

Harris, Michigan

One of two golf courses at the Island Resort and Casino in the Upper Peninsula, Sweetgrass received the Jemsek National Course of the Year Award in 2022. With an open layout, an island green on No. 15 and finishing par 5s on each side, the course is fun and challenging. The base rate is $85.

Minnesota

Chaska Town Course

Chaska, Minnesota

Set on 285 acres of oak groves, open prairie and marshlands, the par-72 course has seven different tee box options, ranging from 6,817 to 4,853 yards. While rates can creep up to $100 to ride on weekends during the summer, weekday tee times to walk are available for under $60. Chaska will host the U.S. Amateur in August.

Mississippi

The Refuge Golf Course

Flowood, Mississippi

The Jackson-area course, woven through the wetlands, recently underwent renovations to provide a more playable layout and reopened in the spring of 2021. The Sheraton Flowood Refuge Hotel and Conference Center offers stay-and-play options if you’re looking for a golf getaway. Peak rates are $69.

Missouri

Stone Canyon Golf Club

Blue Springs, Missouri

The only Greg Norman-designed course in the Midwest has expansive, creative bunkering and rocky terrain. The green on the 381-yard, par-4 3rd hole features an amphitheater of rocks. Seniors aged 55 and up can pay $60 or less to play.

Montana

spinner image canyon river golf course in montana
Canyon River’s 14th hole, a 179-yard par 3, plays downhill to a well-bunkered green with an impressive mountain backdrop.
Billy Satterfield/Golf Course Gurus

Canyon River Golf Club

Missoula, Montana

The hilly course in Hellgate Canyon features several elevated tee boxes and stunning views of Mount Sentinel. Rates are $69 to walk, but there is a decent distance between some holes, so it might be worth paying the $25 for the cart. Canyon River also has season passes available for seniors.

Nebraska

Wild Horse Golf Club

Gothenburg, Nebraska

This beautifully manicured course has plenty of strategically placed bunkers and fast greens. The fairways are wide on this prairie-links layout, but the tall grass surrounding them will eat up errant drives. Tee times start as low as $61, with military discounts available.

Nevada

Desert Willow Golf Course

Henderson, Nevada

The 18-hole, par-60 Clark County executive course is about a 20-minute drive from the Vegas Strip and has views of Black Mountain. Despite not having a hole over 400 yards — Desert Willow is 3,811 yards from the tips, featuring six par 4s and 12 par 3s —the course is still challenging for all ages and can be played for under $50.

New Hampshire

Breakfast Hill Golf Club

Greenland, New Hampshire

Set on land that served as New Hampshire farmland until 1956, the par-71 course surrounded by soaring pines opened in 2000. There are rocky fairway features and a creek that runs in front of the No. 8 hole. Seniors can walk 18 holes for $35 on weekdays.

New Jersey

Hanover Golf Club

Wrightstown, New Jersey

With seniors having to pay only $44 to play with a cart on afternoons and weekends, there’s not a better deal in New Jersey. The par-71 course that opened in 1962 is just 10 miles off the New Jersey Turnpike. It’s a course for all skill levels and features a challenging finishing hole called “The Monster,” which is over 600 yards from the tips.

New Mexico

Red Hawk Golf Club

Las Cruces, New Mexico

Located at the base of the Organ Mountains, Red Hawks describes itself as a “desert-links” style course. With lush fairways and well-maintained greens, you’ll forget you’re in the desert. Rates range from $21 (walking nine on a weekday afternoon) to $74 (riding 18 on a weekend morning).

New York

Bethpage Red Course

Farmingdale, New York

Bethpage Black on Long Island is known as the most challenging public course in the country. The Black Course has hosted two U.S. Opens and a PGA Championship, and it will host the Ryder Cup in 2025. While you can find a tee time on the Black Course for under $100 ($88 twilight rate on weekdays for out-of-state golfers), you can play the Red Course for less money and frustration.

There’s a hefty discount for seniors who are New York residents ($28 for weekend rates). But don’t take the Red Course lightly: it’s still very challenging, with sharp doglegs and difficult bunker placement.

North Carolina

The Cradle Short Course, Pinehurst Golf

Pinehurst, North Carolina

Pinehurst has been dubbed “The Home of American Golf,” and there’s a way to experience all the history, beauty, and mysticism without having to break the bank. Just steps away from where the U.S. Open will be played in June, there’s a nine-hole, par-3 public course with no hole longer than 127 yards that you can play for $50 with free replays.

Before or after testing your short game at The Cradle, you can take a photo with the Payne Stewart statue, grab a beer at The Deuce and watch groups finish up their final round at the 18thon Pinehurst No. 2 —one of golf’s most historic holes.

North Dakota

spinner image hawktree golf course in utah
Sure to test your accuracy, Hawktree’s 5th hole, a 554-yard, uphill par 5, narrows as it gets to the green. The 18-hole, Par 72 championship course offers 18 distinctive, unique holes, featuring natural hills, brilliant color, plentiful wildlife and native grasses.
Billy Satterfield/Golf Course Gurus

Hawktree Golf Club

Bismarck, North Dakota

The hill-framed, links-style course features prairie grasses and three lakes. The array of colors, from the black-coal sand bunkers to the lush green fairways to the burnt red native grasses, create a mystical setting. Seniors (65 and older) can play 18 holes for $80 or nine holes for $40.

Ohio

The Virtues Golf Club

Nashport, Ohio

Located 40 miles from Columbus, the parkland-style course has elevated tee boxes, thick tree lines and rolling hills, which make for challenging uphill and downhill lies. Seniors can play from Monday to Thursday for $54 or $64, depending on the season.

Oklahoma

Lincoln Park Golf Course

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Lincoln Park, located next to the Oklahoma City Zoo and about 10 minutes from downtown, has two well-maintained 18-hole courses with tree-lined fairways and greens that run true. The West Course has an additional “tournament” tee box and a higher slope than the East Course. For seniors (62 and over), it costs only $17.25 to play, plus the cart.

Oregon

Trysting Tree Golf Club

Corvallis, Oregon

The links-inspired course along the Willamette River is the home course for the Oregon State men’s and women’s golf teams. The raised greens raise the difficulty of approach shots, and there is a lot of water on the back nine to penalize any errant shots. Green fees are $55 for 18 holes (without a cart).

Pennsylvania

Wyncote Golf Club

Oxford, Pennsylvania

With mounded bunkers and moguls, Wyncote is reminiscent of a Scottish links course. And just like on the other side of the pond, the rough at the Chester County course is penal, so hitting the fairway is paramount. While tee times can creep over $100 on weekends, seniors can play from Monday to Friday for $55 (walking) or $70 (riding).

Rhode Island

Triggs Memorial Golf Course

Providence, Rhode Island

There are several courses in Rhode Island designed by the famed Donald Ross, but Triggs, which opened in 1932, is the only one that’s a true public course. While the front nine is relatively flat, it begins with three long par 4s. The back has more elevation change and features a few reachable par 5s. Triggs has a weekend special after 1 p.m. for $58 with a cart, and discounts are offered for seniors 60 and older.

South Carolina

Santee National Golf Club

Santee, South Carolina

With Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head and Kiawah Island, South Carolina is home to some of the most well-known golf destinations in the country. But don’t forget about Santee, referred to as “golf’s little big town.” Santee National, located just off I-95, has conditions similar to the top-of-the-line courses you’d find at one of those elite golf oases but without the resort pricing. You can find online rates at Santee National for $65. The front nine is wider than the back, which has a finishing drive over a lake.

South Dakota

Golf Club at Red Rock

Rapid City, South Dakota

Sitting on the edge of Black Hills National Forest, the course features dramatic elevation changes — including on the opening hole, which is a welcoming downhill short par 4. The undulating terrain presents challenging fairway lies. Green fees are $95, but there is a $70 twilight rate (after 3 p.m.), and senior discounts are available for season passes.

Tennessee

Bear Trace Courses at Harrison Bay

Harrison, Tennessee

The Bear Trace is a collection of three Jack Nicklaus-designed courses in the nine-course Tennessee Golf Trail. While Harrison Bay has thick woods and water touching 12 fairways, golfers get some relief because most greens are open in the front. Senior rates (62 and older) are $49 for 18 holes.

Texas

Butterfield Trail

El Paso, Texas

The desert course was built in 2007 and is set in the foothills of the Franklin Mountains. Each hole is named after a stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail stagecoach route, which carried mail and passengers from Missouri to San Francisco for three years in the mid-1800s. The course is one of the most affordable in Texas, with senior rates of $32 on weekdays and $42 on weekends.

Utah

spinner image green spring golf course in utah
The final par 3, 170-yard 17th hole at Green Spring shows off Southern Utah's iconic red rock scenery.
Billy Satterfield/Golf Course Gurus

Green Spring Golf Course

Washington, Utah

Green Spring, set just outside Red Cliffs National Conservation Area, offers picturesque views of Pine Valley Mountain. The course has some daunting tee shots — including on the par-4, No. 6 hole, with a massive canyon running along the right side. Rates are seasonal, ranging from $40 to $80.

Vermont

Ralph Myhre Golf Course

Middlebury, Vermont

Middlebury College owns and operates this par-71 public course with mountain views on every hole. Trees have recently been removed to give a more golfer-friendly open layout. Green fees are $45, and the course is closed from November to April.

Virginia

The Green Course at Golden Horseshoe Golf Club

Williamsburg, Virginia

Golden Horseshoe has two courses: The Gold Course has been rated one of the top 50 golf courses in America by Golf Digest, but it will cost you nearly $200 to play. The Green Course is longer but more forgiving — on the links and in your wallet, with tee times under $100. Inspired by his father Robert Trent Jones Sr.’s layout of the Gold Course, Rees Jones built the Green Course in 1991 on the same terrain in Colonial Williamsburg.

Washington

Liberty Lake Golf Course

Liberty Lake, Washington

The par-70 course 18 miles east of Spokane was redesigned in 2008 and reopened in 2010 after a $6 million renovation. Liberty Lake features big greens that roll true. Seniors 60 and older can play for $36 with the purchase of a discount card.

West Virginia

The Arnold Palmer Signature Course at Stonewall Resort

Roanoke, West Virginia

Designed by Ed Seay, the seven-time major winner after whom it’s named, the course incorporates Stonewall Jackson Lake into its mountainous layout. Drives in your cart over the bridges provide some of the best scenic views during the round. Fast greens make putting a challenge. Tee times range from $59 to $94 for out-of-state residents.

Wisconsin

Lawsonia’s Links Course

Green Lake, Wisconsin

The course, built in 1930 by golf architects William Langford and Theodore Moreau, embraces its firm-and-fast playing surface and traditional links features — including few trees, deep bunkers, rolling hills, wide fairways and undulating greens. The minimalistic approach to its design can be refreshing for golf purists. You can play a round for $70 or less.

Wyoming

Three Crowns Golf Club

Casper, Wyoming

With water coming into play on nearly every hole and dozens of large bunkers and greens constructed to USGA standards, this stunning course that Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed can be challenging at every turn. But the par-71 course is less than 7,000 yards from the tips, allowing some reprieve. On Mondays, seniors can play for $52.
