‘The Golden Bachelorette’ Episode 4 Recap: The Men Strip Down, Joan Gets Emotionally Naked

Joan (and whooping audience women) check out the guys’ abs, one man has an ice-skating mishap, a home-cooked dinner goes awry, and front-runner Chock has to exit the show

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD

There was lust, grief, laughter and tears on the fourth episode of The Golden Bachelorette, ABC’s reality dating show featuring older contestants (airing Wednesday nights on ABC, 8-10 p.m. ET; streaming on Hulu the next night).

Don’t miss this: Discover the Secrets of Long-Lasting Love

The men campaigning for Joan’s love shrank from a field of 11 to seven, the competition got tougher, and Joan’s resistance seemed to increase, despite her reawakened hopes for romance. Happily for viewers sick of hearing the reality stars talk about their “journey,” the word is getting less frequent on the show: There were 24 journey mentions in the premiere, 11 in Episode 3, and only eight in Episode 4. Maybe by the end of the journey, they’ll retire the word.

But the journey went on entertainingly in Episode 4. Here are some highlights.

Chock was chock-full of hope for marriage

After Joan broke into tears of grief over her late husband in the last episode, Chock felt like it brought him closer to his goal. “She opened up,” he said, “and the breakthrough has absolutely brought her closer to me.”

Joan told a different story, not about one guy comforting her — more like Snow White being comforted by all 11 dwarves. “Last night was a particularly hard evening. I got kind of emotional, and these guys, like, just enveloped me. They were so kind and so understanding. I felt so much better. I felt like this weight was lifted off of me.”

Chock thought it meant her weight might be about to be lifted onto his lap forever. “It’s brought this relationship up a notch. And I’ve already had a one-on-one [date], but I’ll take another one in a nanosecond!”

Not so fast, Chock

Before anybody got a solo clinch, everybody had to go through a group ordeal, so Joan could test their mettle. All the men got a card reading, “Bare it all for love.” The guys puzzled over what this means as they got whisked off to Hollywood for a mystery event. “Could be bear wrestling, who knows?” one said. “I say pole dancing,” guessed another.

The Bachelorette star Kaitlyn Bristowe, 39, gave the men their stripping orders

Kaitlyn Bristowe told the men they were there to compete with the Chippendale Dancers, whose abs look like Praxiteles sculpted them. “Joan is looking for somebody who is spontaneous and confident, and somebody who can light up a room with their personality,” she said, and stripping would be emotionally revealing. “Are you nervous?” she taunted them.

He may or may not get Joan, but Mark conquered one woman’s heart

“Kelsey’s dad is just like a DILF!” enthused Bristowe, who’s 18 years younger than Mark. “He’s a dad I’d like to fool around with.” Then she said, as if she didn’t realize she was on camera, “No, don’t put that [on TV]!” Reality TV pundits speculate that Bristowe was entirely aware she was on camera, and Mark may be a leading candidate not only for Joan’s affections but to star on the second Golden Bachelor show.

Pascal reacted to the scary prospect of public near-nudity with a classic Gallic shrug

As the guys prepared to doff their duds, the ladies in the crowd cheered to see the tables turned and guys getting judged on their bodies for once, as Lady Gaga’s vulgar tune boomed: “Don’t think too much, just bust that kick, I wanna take a ride on your disco stick!”

“There’s nobody 100 percent confident,” Keith said. But Pascal, who is nothing if not French and arrogant, said, “I’m the kind of guy, I go to the gym about five, six times a week, so I’m in very good shape.” His only concern was the violence he did to the shirt he tore off. “I would never do that to my T-shirt. Prada doesn’t rip like that!”

Jonathan was the star stripper

Keith actually had a longtime dream of being a stripper, yet he proved correct to be underconfident — he looks better with his clothes on. But Jonathan looks sensational clothed and improves in the rude. “Sergeant Sexy is the name of my outfit!” he said. “Jonathan is the man. I don’t know if he’s done this before, but he’s nailing it,” Keith said accurately.

Chock pulled ahead of the pack in the race for Joan’s heart — but can he cross the finish line in the home stretch?

“I really missed you a lot,” Joan told Chock. “I do believe that there could be a future with us. And you make me feel really safe.” Chock couldn’t keep his hand off her thigh. “I’m crazy about you. The only thing I do not like about this is those other 10 guys. Can I just whisk you away?” Later, he confessed, “Man, she makes me feel good. And I think the passion is there as well.” It sure looked like it. “For the first time, I could kind of picture a future with somebody,” Joan said. So did she give him a rose? Of course she did.

Death struck Chock’s mom, but it only increased his bond with Joan

Overcome with emotion, Chock told Joan he had to leave the show, because his ailing mom had just died. She could relate to his guilt for not being there for her. “I’m a lot of guilt from John [Joan’s husband] dying. He died in his sleep, and I wasn’t there with him. He was in another room trying to get a little rest, and I went into another room and fell asleep. I found him gone, so I know the guilt, yeah.”

Jordan fell on his butt, but laughter is the best love medicine

Joan was jittery about her ice-skating date with Jordan, scared that she wouldn’t be able to get Chock out of her mind. But the date went great, partly because the guy she thought was Mr. Athlete turned out to be a clod on skates, doing a pratfall and landing on his derriere. She laughed at him, in a good way. “It was like, super romantic,” she said. “He’s very fun to be with. Like, it feels good in his arms after an emotional morning. It’s exactly what I needed. We laughed probably more than I’ve laughed on any of the dates.”

Joan’s date with Guy was no recipe for romance

She thought, What could go wrong? Her whole family loves to cook together, and who’d be better to cook with than a smart, handsome physician? Turns out Guy might be able to save your life, but he can’t zest a lemon to save his life. “Guy’s an ER doctor! I’m a little worried!” Joan noted after his kitchen fiasco.

Chock made a dramatic reentry into Joan’s life — but don’t start those wedding bells just yet

Reunited with Joan after his mom’s death, Chock confessed he’s got a problem with letting his armor down with her, because he’s afraid of being hurt. She said she feels the same way. He remained crazy about her. “I missed Chock, and I’m so happy that he came back so quickly,” she said. “I feel like he did that for me.” It gave her hope. But ominously for Chock, she added, “I can imagine it now — I see a future with more than one person.”

Joan sent four guys packing — and suggested that she just might have to dump every one of them

Charles, Gary, Dan and Gil got the boot, and said they left the show with no hard feelings (though we didn’t see or hear much from Gil — unsurprising, since it was recently revealed that his ex filed a temporary restraining order against him, so Gil’s Golden Bachelorette future was nil). In the preview of the next episode, Joan wailed, “It takes a while to open up your heart. I’m not sure if mine's completely there … because I miss John so much. You think as you get older, you get tougher. You don’t, you get more fragile.”

We predict Joan will find the strength to go on — but it sounds like the guys face a tough challenge in filling the late John’s shoes.
