WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD
If you saw The Golden Bachelor last year, or any of the shows in ABC's The Bachelor reality show franchise, you know something of what to expect from this first season of The Golden Bachelorette: Among other givens, there will be buckets of tears (OMG, the crying!), agonizingly slow rose ceremonies, laughs and bonding between contestants (minus that one guy who didn’t come there to make friends), and sexy nights behind closed doors when things get serious. Then, at the end, the star will give her pick of the litter the Final Rose and they’ll live happily ever after (insert eye roll or dreamy smile here, depending on your level of faith in reality show-inspired love).

But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. The gist of the two-hour debut episode: We were reunited with Joan Vassos, 61, a lovely widow from Rockville, Maryland, who was one of the women vying for Golden Bachelor Gerry Turner’s apparently fickle heart last year. Now the Golden Bachelorette, Vassos met her bevy of 24 eligible bachelors, then mingled with them at an awkward-looking, testosterone-heavy all-night cocktail party at the L.A. mansion where the men are housed during the show’s taping. They each tried to get her alone to impress her with their love-worthiness, before she sent six dudes packing at dawn.
Now off the show:
Bill, 68, a retired videographer from Portland, Oregon; David, 68, a Texas rancher who showed up to greet Vassos on a horse; Ken, 60, who’s from Massachusetts and loves Miley Cyrus; Pablo, 63, an EMT volunteer from Maryland; R.J., 66, a California financial adviser; and Thomas, 62, a New York City Fire Department chief who plays the ukulele.
Here are some of the other memorable moments and takeaways from the premiere.
The show — as all of the Bachelor/Bachelorette series do — began with the contestants offering slightly or very cringey meet-cute schticks.
One by one, the men climbed out of their limos to meet Vassos, she of the long blond tresses and glittery golden (get it?) gown. Each had created a greeting meant to help him stand out from the herd. Chock, 60 an insurance exec from Wichita, Kansas, said he’d heard she makes a great chicken noodle soup, so, “I brought my own — Chock-a-noodle soup,” and offered her a taste of it from a jar. (Was it even hot? Ew.) “That is delicious!” she said.
California chiropractor Bob, 66, walked toward her with a massive video camera, ostensibly filming the experience for his kids (it’s 2024 — use your iPhone, man!).
And everyone, everyone, told her how beautiful she was (she knows, guys, she knows!).
The last, "surprise" arrival was Mark, father of Kelsey Anderson, 28 – recipient of the final rose and a marriage proposal from Joey Graziadei, 29, on Season 28 of The Bachelor.
Anderson, wearing a shimmering bright green gown, slinked out of her limo to greet Vassos, then introduced her handsome dad, Mark. A widower and Army veteran from Leesville, Louisiana, he's the baby of the group at 57, and actually seems like a pretty cool guy. Plus, he’s got a great smile (I’d give him a rose for sure).
